Matthew 28:18-20:Is this really about water baptism?
Posted : 12 Jun, 2010 04:41 PM

This is something the Lord had been showing me for a few years about Matthew 28:18-20,this is not a mandate for

water Baptism;Acts 2:38 is.

Please look up the word Baptizing in Matthew 28:19,along with the two words "Teach"verse 19 and Teaching verse 20..

Then ask ABBA,what He is saying in this His Word..

Remember the context of this is about Discipleship.

Yeshua has commissioned these Jewish men to be going to the Nations/the Ethnos-Unclean ones.

They are to be making Disciples unto Yeshua the Jewish Messiah.

What the Lord shows you should be understood and taught by the Church, for this is not talking about water Baptism.

This is talking about immersing People into or with the Names Of GOD,as revealed in the Old Covenant.

To baptize a person in water,is a one time event.

To be baptizing/immersing believers into or with the names of GOD,is an on going continuous process, which requires that I have a deep understand of the Lord and His revealed names myself.

Each name reveals His character, attitude, personality;Who He is and what He is like.

Baptism,in water is unto the Remission/Forgiveness/the release of sins from the sinner..

And in the name of Yeshua,ONLY:Please read Acts 2 :38

In Yeshua;

Hey Trucker,

I am sorry to have to disagree, but the word used here for Baptize is a derivative of a greek word that means to moisten. (Strongs G911) To moisten them about the names of God makes no sense to me, so I will stick with the original translation.

Much love,

Leon

Trucker,

No, I have the same definition, but I am talking about the root of that word. Where it came from, what it is related to, etc..

G907

βαπτίζω

baptizō

Thayer Definition:

1) to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk)

2) to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash ones self, bathe

3) to overwhelm

Part of Speech: verb

A Related Word by Thayers/Strongs Number: from a derivative of G911

Citing in TDNT: 1:529, 92

Notice 907 is derived from the word #G911 which is:

G911

βάπτω

baptō

bap'-to

A primary verb; to whelm, that is, cover wholly with a fluid; in the New Testament only in a qualified or specific sense, that is, (literally) to moisten (a part of ones person), or (by implication) to stain (as with dye): - dip.

I find it helps me know more about the meaning if I understand completely what the word means. I always look at the root of a word, it is eye opening.

Blessings,

Leon

My Sisters and Brothers,

help me here and tell me if what I say makes sense or not.

The author of Matthew had disciples that he taught and they in turn taught others. Would not these disciples know exactly what Matthew meant when he wrote Matthew 28:18-20? I would think that Matthew would explain quite clearly what Christ taught and showed him.

So if these disciples who heard it from the disciples that heard it straight from The Author's mouth wrote letters about Baptisim...why should we say that they are wrong? If all the disciples wrote the same thing...how can we justify claiming that they are All Wrong?

Think about it...for over 1500 years there was no problem with Baptisim and what it meant.

Read the Early Fathers of The Church. They are long winded but you will be amazed at what you read.

Peace

Acts 8:36And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

Trucker what does this passage say? Jesus is speaking to His disciples and to all believers this is the Commisson Jesus is sending the disciples forth as well as all believers to minister the gospel to the people and make disciples of them.

Verses 18-20: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Therefore, you Go, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and look, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen.

You ask if the baptizing Jesus speaks about is really about water baptism. I would ask you what other baptism could He possibly be speaking about, if not water. The disciples nor do we, as believers have the pwoer to baptize anyone with any other baptism. So yes, Jesus is speaking about water baptism where in you baptise new believers who have been converted in the name of the Lord. First step of their faith after conversion.

Outline of Biblical Usage 1) to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk)

2) to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one's self, bathe

3) to overwhelm

"Note on Baptism in Ac. Baptism in water (such as John's) is distinguished from baptism with the Holy Spirit (i. 5, etc.). Those who receive the latter, however, may also be baptized in water (cf. xi. 16 with x. 47); and there is one example of people who had previously received John's baptism receiving Christian baptism as a preliminary to receiving the Spirit (xix. 3 ff.). John's was a baptism of repentance (xiii. 24; xix. 4), as was also Christian baptism (ii. 38), but as John's pointed forward to Jesus (xix. 4), it became obsolete when He came. Christian baptism followed faith in the Lord Jesus (xvi. 31 ff.); it was associated with His name (ii. 38; viii. 16, etc.), which was invoked by the person baptized (xxii. 16); it signified the remission (ii. 38) or washing away of sins (xxii. 16); sometimes it preceded (ii. 38; viii. 15 ff.; xix. 5), sometimes followed (x. 47 f.) the receiving of the Spirit." (F. F. Bruce. The Acts of the Apostles [Greek Text Commentary], London: Tyndale, 1952, p. 98, n. 1.)

This word should not be confused with bapt (911). The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptizo is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words. Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be 'dipped' (bapt) into boiling water and then 'baptised' (baptiz) in the vinegar solution. Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptising the vegetable, produces a permanent change.
