Operation Overlord 75 Years On...

On June 6th 1944, the greatest amphibious landing in the history of the world was taking place on several beaches on the coast of Normandy. British, American and Canadian troops landed on the beaches, while during the early hours of the morning British and US Paratrooper divisions landed behind enemy lines in a surprise attack in order to pave the way for the incoming troops on the beaches. The Germans had no idea that the Allied forces were going to hit the beaches of Normandy. The German command was convinced that the Allies were going to hit the port of Calais because of flawless deception tactics by the allies. By 18:00 hours, a beachhead had been made, but at a price. 10,000 casualties were amounted for the allied forces, most of which were paratroopers and the US troops that had stormed Omaha beach. But nonetheless, a foothold was made. Now the Allied command could begin to plan out the recapture of France and the eventual assault on Germany. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Operation Overlord or as its otherwise known the D Day landings. I ask that everyone who reads this write up would on the 6th of June just take a couple of minutes to remember the great sacrifice made by those brave soldiers on that day 75 years ago. They fought against oppression and evil and many paid with their lives for your freedom today. So please just give those men a couple of minutes of your time in rememberance. " Greater love hath no man than this , that a man lay down his life for his friends" John 15:13 (KJV)
