I have heard that Billy Graham said that the greatest mission field is the American church. What are your thoughts?

The biggest mission field to me is the whole world in general. The world as a whole fell along with Adam into sin. The Lord said to his apostels to "go into ALL the world and preach the gospel to everyone". Everyone we meet we should try to find some way to share the gospel with. :excited:

I disagree with that. Christ himself in the scriptures said that he came to save those who were lost. I am sure many lost people attend church, but the REAL church is the body of Christ which is made up of people who are already saved, and therefore don't fall under a mission field possibility. In actuality those who are saved are missionaries by default. Wherever we go we are being an example to someone. If we choose to lock ourselves in our homes and not contact the outside world very often, we are still being examples to the Angels (both the good ones and Satan's fallen ones :angeldevil:) of what it means to be human and saved.

Christ's intentions for those who are saved are to minister (witness) to the unsaved people as far as missions work, and to help those who are in need every day, whether saved or not in what ever way they need. (poor, widows, disabled, etc)

If you look in the gospels, Christ said to his apostles, "Go into ALL the WORLD and preach the Gospel to everyone..."

That about sums it up.

The only person we should put on a pedistal and admire is Christ. Put any human being up there and He/ She will fall. Billy Grahm is a good servant of the Lord, however not everything he says is truth/ correct. He is, afterall, human and will make mistakes. Be a Berean and always search the scriptures when people make claims about Christianity, even if they are evangelists, clergy, or the everyday person like me. Find out for yourself if what they say is truth an in accordance with the scriptures.

:prayingm: Amen Sister. We to many time take what the speaker is saying for the Gospel truth. We each need to search our hearts and scripture to find the truth. I am an evangelist and have been for almost 20 year now. I know I am human and I know I make mistakes. The Church is the body of Christ and it is not the mission fields. The world is the biggest mission field. In the Gospels Christ said go ye in to ALL the world preaching the Gospel. Not just to the Church but to EVERYONE. " It's time that we the people stand up for what is right. It's time we squared our shoulders back and raise our swords to fight. For the Bible is our weapon and the Spirit is our shield. The Church needs more of it's members to be workers in the field". Like the singer Carman said. "We need God in America Again. I am going to take it one step further. We need God in the world again. :prayingm:

I don't know but I feel that Billly Graham was probably eluding to the fact that, in many instances, the American church has lost her first love (very similar to some of the earlier churches in the Bible) When the programs start out-weighing Jesus then the church becomes a business and loses it's purpose. Someone gave me an example I have never forgotten. Imagine the Lord sitting on a chair and you at His feet. Next imagine you sitting on a chair with Jesus at your feet. The question is this...Is Christ serving your purposes or are you servling His. You can have all the outward appearances of godliness but deny the power therein. I feel the American church is so busy pleasing everyone that they have truely lost their first love and need to go back to the hillside and sit at Jesus' feet and listen to what He has to say. We need to get back to heart of worship and it truely is all about Him.

Before I can opinionate about Billy Graham I would have to know the "rest of the story." What was the whole context of his serman...Although I am not Baptist, I do have a lot of respect for the man and he has been a truely great servant of the Lord right here in the good ol' USA.

Dear sister Strawberi50, I would have to agree with you.The truth is that the scripture says that" judgment begins in the house of God". Therefore Billy Graham is right when He says that the churches here are the biggest mission field. As for all you other critics of Billy Graham lets take a looks at the demographics of the situation.

Here in the USA there are way to many denominations of the Church. Also, there are some sects/cults that are calling themselves a church. The are over 242 denominations and maybe 25% of these actually worship the Lord for who he is. The other are mainly house of religion/legalism. We must return to our first love(Jesus Christ).

Secondly, here in the US we enjoy freedoms that are not enjoyed so widely around the globe. The other churches around the world in most places are to busy being burned down, massacred, plotted against, chased into the desert or underground, or scattered due to persecution. Yet they still manage to send missionaries here and Canada, all while spreading the Gospel of Christ to the uttermost parts of the earth. Here in America, we grumble because someone took our seat in Church. We wine about the offering plate/bucket coming around and say here is a dollar or I got to many bills plus most of us do not tithe no matter how many times we are encouraged to do so. We don't feel right if the praise song isn't to our liking. We can barely pray for five consecutive minutes and we look at our watches when the pastor is in the spirit giving the Word but it is 12:00pm and we are hungry. Any of this sounds familiar? Seriously we need to wake up. The scripture says " to whom much is given, much is required."

Lastly, we are currently the greatest country in the world with 96% of the worlds churches and I think about 80% of the worlds wealth. If we were about our Father's business ( the other 75%) our economy would be in better shape, our people would be in better health, our streets would be more safe, our schools would teach better, and our live would be more full. This is all because we as a people turned from our wicked ways and repented onto the Lord Most High in Jesus and He moves among his people( 2 Chron.7:14). Once our people/nation are in order we will have a greater effectiveness in missions as a nation. Therefore, do not take offense to what Billy Graham has said because he is right. He is not cutting down those who serve the Lord in Spirit and Truth. Are you actively sharing your faith or are you just hoping that someone will come to you because of your charisma?

Dear Brother in christ I totally agree with what you said!

Billy Graham might have said it rightly that it is because we see liberalism and eastern mysticism was spreading in the united states.God chose Israel to be client nation for evangelism but jews rejected Christ as a result the heathen from other countries was chosen for world evangelism.Once the England was the client nation for world evangelism but it gradually deteriorated in its faith.what we see in England today the unbelievers especially the Moslems settled and built mosques and supporting the world terrorism.Today very few people believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.Darkness pervaded in England. And God slowly chosed US to be his client nation .America is a client nation of God to support the world evangelism but today in the name of democracy and religious freedom many other religions and temples have been built for Idol worship. The nation which produced great servants of God is declining to believe in the existence of God.I believe America is a christian country because it says In God we trust I believe this God is Lord Jesus Christ.God has a great plan that US be a client nation to spread the gospel around the world! Yes it did! Like the early apostles evangelizing the world and presently doing its best for world evangelism, I greatly appreciate the American church for its commitment and burden for the unreached millions in the world. But slowly the church attendance in US has declined so God sent economic recession. Instead of turning towards God people thought to choose the different Government. People believed in the change in government. People believing that obama will do something great but God has a greater plan for US in world evangelism. But in the name of religious freedom and democracy big temples are built. Recently I have seen in the news that a big shrine of Ayyappa temple was built in the US and thousands of people are doing the Idol worship. When I share gospel to our relatives who are mostly fundamental Hindu they say first you go and evangelize western countries. Why people in US are building shrines for Idol worship why dont they believe that Jesus Christ is the only savior of mankind. Here in India thousands of churches were being burnt and vandalized pastors are beaten with rods some state governments are trying to pass anti-religious conversion bill which would affect a lot for evangelism in India. As Jesus stated the biggest mission field is also US along with other countries in the world. A Christian or an evangelist duty is to preach gospel to all nations. An evangelist is not confined to one country but obliged to preach every where in the world. As for the statement of Jesus his great commission includes even US All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age(Matt 28:18-20)..I believe US also needs evangelization and revival in the present context. There is nothing wrong in the statement of Billy Graham. He made it with great concern for America. Indians have great respect for Billy Graham.
