lobola is a traditional south african dowry custom where by the man pays the family of his bride to be, for her hand in Marrige. the custom is aimed at bringing the two families together, fostering mutual respect, and indicating that the man is capable of supporting his wife financially and emotionally. traditionally the lobola payment was in cattle. however most urban couples have switched to using hard cold cash. the process of lobola negotiation can be long and complex and involves many members from both the bride and grooms extended families. often, to dispel the tensions between the families a bottle of brandy is placed on the table. this is usually not drunk. it is a simple gesture to welcome the guest family and make everyone feel more relaxed. lobola has some unintended negative effects. it has created a financial barrier for young men looking for brides. :( so with the little information given, what do you guys think about it?

Believe God said in His word " a man who has found a wife, has found a good thing ". No mention of money, dowry, etc. and far out of place in 2008.

With as many enthusiasts around the world seeking US Citizenship for various reasons, I'd avoid any situation where this body could be bought with any price.. my soul is already owned by the one true God who desired it for His glory and would embrace it to shape it, make it... white as snow! The body was designed to go back to the earth one day so why invest money in that which moth can corrupt, rust can decay, or a thief can steal? (In reference to the tangible rather then the intangible.)

Blessings!!!

Dowry is alive and thriving here in the Western world also. Engagement rings. The brides family paying huge amounts for the wedding (in some cultures it's the woman's side that puts up the dowry in order to show that they are a family that you would want to be associated with). Don't knock it just because it's not your way.

Tisha..

That would fall moreso into the category of ritual and tradition, rather then dowry. A man chooses his wife to be, if she accepts him.. money plays no part of that biblical equation.

Not looking to debate here, but if you still find this explanation unsatisfactory.. pray to God about it and seek out His guidance... this vessel is just a mere man while God always has the right answer.....

God bless you sis!!
