About Me
Bubbly grad student who studies media, video games and digital fandoms. My chosen career, or rather education path, has led me from Manila to Cardiff, and now here. It's not exactly ideal, but I know what it means to move around and long for one's home country and one's family, while making new friendships. This day, I would love to believe that I have four hometowns. One of them, I haven't seen yet (unless I want to die early).

I've been attending church for as long as I can remember, but I came to Christ when I was twelve because of a family tragedy (ask me about it sometime). That also means that I've been a Christian for a while, but like many others, I am still growing.

I also consider myself an intersectional feminist, because I have seen and experienced systemic gender and racial oppression both in the academia, in tech and in media industries. Christ too stood up for women and he understood systemic oppression. While there has been a lot of improvements for women, in the past few decades, there is still lots of work to be done in many areas (ie. diverse representation, equal pay in workplaces, access to education, etc). By identifying as a feminist I :
1. am not a man-hater
2. I am not Jezebel II and I do not seek to usurp anyone's position or question biblical principles, only to interrogate how we use the discourse of complementarism. and while biblical, this same discourse is also used to keep women out of certain professions, etc.
3. use this term to discuss equality because other terms such as "humanism" have a tendency to ask for equality but negate histories of oppression and the work that many have done to ensure the rights of women.

As for my interests, I obviously love games. I play almost anything from massive RPG trilogies like Mass Effect to otome games. I play a lot of games for research, but sometimes I just try to have fun with them (and then think of something to write about especially after investing more than 100 hours in a game). Because I play games for research, I find that I can relax more while watching shows (anime, K-dramas, BBC dramas and Netflix stuff in particular). I also love theatre, and I miss the West End and the Globe theatre where I could just watch something for under five pound stirling. Theatre here in North America is just so pricey, especially for a poor grad student. Someday, I will be able to afford a ticket to see "Hamilton." I also love traveling, and I mostly travel in the summer in between conferences. I'm more of a budget traveller though. I mostly enjoy staying in airbnbs, eating street food and trying to experiencing "local" (and at times glocal) cultures. I wish I am not dismally bad at a lot of sports (particularly those that involve running and a lot of hand-eye coordination), but at least I am a fairly good swimmer.

Community-wise, I used to co-host a local radio show before, and I presently organize local events for geek girls. :) I am not sure if I am an introvert or an extrovert, since as much as I love people, I also love my alone time.

I love animals! I grew up with dogs most of my life, and have lived with my roommates cats. I'm actually thinking of adopting a cat. At various points of my childhood, I also had chickens, a duck, and rabbits for pets.

In putting up a profile here, I don't expect to find next incarnation of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy here (Austen made him far too perfect so I am looking for someone more human), but it is for the possibility of meeting other people who are open to discuss faith, relationships, culture, your dog (or cat), what you think about the upcoming Star Wars films or the next episode of Doctor Who (btw, female Doctor. yay!). Maybe we can start from there.
First Date
Maybe surprise me? Otherwise, coffee? Bubble tea? A place with good matcha would also be nice.
