Which Covenant is Your Relationship?
A marriage can be like the Old Testament Covenant. There are all of these laws that one must keep and rules that one must follow and works that one must do in order to stay in good standing with each other. Whenever someone fails, they must make sacrifices to atone for those mistakes. God is perfect and cannot sin, so this burden was on the Israelites alone. But in a marriage, both parties must work to live according to the covenant promises that they made to each other.
However, you will always make mistakes, and you will always fall short of actually being able to successfully do all of the things that are required of you. No matter how many sacrifices you make, it can never be enough to compensate for your lack of perfection. Just like how it is impossible to be right with God by means of obeying all of His Laws. It is an objectively impossible endeavor.
So strive to have a New Testament Covenant relationship in your marriage. All of the sacrifices that you make and the works that you do should be out of love and compassion for each other instead of being based from fear or guilt of failure. Your works should not be purposed to make amends, but to care for and support each other.
We can never do enough to make up for our mistakes. It is God Who paid the ultimate sacrifice out of His Love for us. Jesus is the only One worthy enough to redeem our sins for righteousness. Therefore, it is not by works that we show our love for each other, but it is by love that we show our works for each other.
- First Date
- For a first date, I'd likely just go out to dinner so we can talk. Once we know more about our interests, then we can plan on doing more things together on future dates.
