New Creation vs Old Creation

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17)

The Bible teaching concerning new creatures of a new creation was never about a new or renewed material creation with remade or regenerated physical bodies.

The old and new creations were terms that described the two covenant relationships that are found in the Bible, the old covenant and the new covenant.

God has removed the old creation, so that his new creatures now dwell in a new creation.

The New Creation is about Covenant Relationship

The new creation creature is a new believer with a new covenant status before God. Likewise, the old creation creature was the believer in the old covenant.

In the old covenant, people were required to be circumcised into the covenant body of Adam/Moses. In the new covenant believers come into a covenant relationship with God through faith in the Lord Jesus. Their faith obtains for them the new covenant ‘circumcision.’

The New Creation has a New Circumcision

The apostle wrote: "In [Christ] also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands...” (Colossians 2:11)

The new covenant circumcision involves giving up the former fleshly covenant, and putting on the new covenant relationship in Christ, as it is written, "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires." (Romans 13:14)

New Creation of the Spirit, Old Creation of the flesh

The old creation lineage, from Adam to Moses, was referred to by the apostle Paul as being ‘born of the flesh’ – natural people who worshipped God. But, those of the new creation lineage in Christ, are ‘born of the Spirit’ – spiritual people because of the Spirit of God.

‘Born of the flesh’ was an expression that portrayed how the old covenant people entered the kingdom of God through circumcision eight days after birth. Proselytes were also circumcised.

However, the new covenant in Christ is entered by a desire to obey God’s will, as expressed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. When the gospel was believed, the believer was ‘born of the Spirit,’ and “circumcised with a circumcision made without hands...”

They are made new creatures in God’s new creation.

There are for sure many uncircumcised hearts among Christians, and not many have the desire to obey God. So, how much are they a new creation? We are recognized by our fruit. I don't think many of us have put to sleep the old Adam. I don't think that many crucify the flesh. Who really seeks to obey God?
