Since this is a Christian site, then I'll first mention that I'm United Church of Christ. Out of the menu options, "Church of Christ" could be confused with Churches of Christ; which is different from UCC and "United" could be confused with United Church of Canada. Although each UCC congregation is different, I quite like the progressive ideas of Cleveland leadership and of the more progressive, open and affirming, social justice UCC congregations. This sets me apart from most modern American Christians; which is why it's all the more important to be up front and open about it. I come from a family where my dad goes to a non-denominational church and my mom goes to a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. I was sent to an LCMS school through 8th grade and it took me quite a while to realize that it's not the right doctrine for me. I'm very comfortable with the UCC congregation that I attend now having a non-literal and 21st century approach to the Bible and incorporating modern scholarship, modern science, non-canonical texts, some Unitarian Universalist ideas and even occasional mention of Hindu and Buddhist ideas. I'm also quite comfortable with the idea of the Christian Left; in social, political and economic ideas. I'm into meditation alone at home; but for Wednesday Lent services, I went to a different UCC congregation which started services with "an invitation to breathe". My home congregation is quite small and dates to 1843; so they don't have as many services or events and sometimes I go to other local congregations.
To state the obvious, my life would be very different if I had kids; but having never had any, it pretty much defines my lifestyle outside of work. I wanted kids when I was younger; but I'm 45 now and I just can't imagine starting with it at my age. I love live music; including road trips, festivals and camping. I also get to a lot of Milwaukee Bucks games; as well as Wisconsin and Marquette men's basketball and women's volleyball. I got quite into watching women's college basketball on TV this season, too. A few times since Covid, I've been to like 85 live shows in a year. Mostly bluegrass/folk/Americana/roots/old-timey/outlaw country/gypsy jazz; but also jazz, female singer-songwriters, classical, music from India and yes, even some rock. In 2022-23, I got to 17 regular season Bucks games and I'm pretty sure that will remain a record. This season, I got to 9 regular season games; plus a few college games. I think that live concerts per year will trend downwards for the rest of my life, too; but I want to get to more Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra shows and I've been going to more jazz shows lately, too.
I like to go to art museums; not only in Milwaukee; but also when visiting other cities. I like to go out for a fish fry about once a month. I like state parks and I had been camping mostly for music festivals or multi-night stands by the same band, in recent years; after camping in state parks a lot in the '00s; but now I'm getting more into camping in state parks again. I pass a state park on the way home from work every day and I like to just hike there sometimes after work. There's a lake and boat launch there, too. I do have access to a fishing boat; but I don't go that often. When there's no events going on, then I can also be very much a homebody on most nights after work. I get up hours before work and do lots of routine chores before work. If there's no events that night, then I go to bed quite early; but I watch most Bucks games on TV.
- First Date
- Maybe a bite to eat at somewhere casual or a live show, or both. A fish fry would be great. Maybe a show by a small, local band.
