What to do with impatience in another?
Posted : 10 May, 2012 10:00 PM

I recently had a discussion with someone on the beliefs on Christmas and Easter celebration. Our ideas were opposing and I admit I was strong on how I believed. He was trying to explain his side but wasn't giving scripture to back it up. I know that he had it to do so.....yet he was fixed on the idea that I was set in my way of thinking. It was something that I have grown up on to believe and whether or not it was true....I wasn't willing to except it until scripture backed it up!

I feel I was justified in beleiving that is how you prove what is acceptable to God. In the end....I turned to someone else with more patience and I have since explained to this gentleman that I didn't feel we had a proper connection because he lacked patience. It would have been simple enough to give me scripture and say...I hope that God gives you wisdom to understand it instead of saying....."ur gonna beleive what you want and it doesn't seem that giving you the scripture is gonna change it". Quite an assumption considering he hardly knew me.

I even explained that I am the type that might need to ask 3 different ways or times before I get it...this didn't seem to matter. So tell me....or give me advice on this matter?

Hi Patti,

People tend to have varying degrees of patience, for some it is truly a gift and for others it can be hard to muster. Often, unless two people are trying to come together in agreement...one or the other will eventually seek to simply prove the other person wrong by any means necessary. I'm not sure if this is merely sinful human nature or there is some other cause.

As to the problem, understanding...

I would probably pray about it, I've had to pray before to ask the father to give someone understanding about something, or to come to agreement with you on something. What comes to mind is when the Lord hardened the Pharaoh's heart in exodus, and Proverbs 21 "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will."

He actively effects the way people hear us, and whether they hear us at all or not. The futility you may feel can come from simply not finding the right person to connect with and have that understanding with.

:applause:

Often times Men do not even now the Scriptures well enough to give an answer. Just pray for them and them move

on.

The problem is that you can pick and choose Scripture and rip it wildly out of context to "back up" any number of views. So using it the way you're saying doesn't really prove anything.

Good point, Bain... the same can be said of nearly anything though. Satan used scripture and changed it's meaning when he was tempting Christ in the desert. Jesus corrected him each time he lied and made a subtle (sometimes not so subtle) change. Not only is scripture misquoted, it is taken out of context...because so many believe differently based on the doctrines they'd been taught since they were very young.

"ur gonna beleive what you want and it doesn't seem that giving you the scripture is gonna change it".

First of all, this sounds like a cop-out as if he was bluffing and not actually able to lead you to the scriptures which had led him to believe what he believed.

If someone's beliefs are founded in scripture, then they'll lead you to the same scriptures which formed their beliefs.

If someone's beliefs are founded in their own opinion, they'll keep arguing with you from the position of their opinion while telling you what they believe is Biblical.

Imagine taking this approach with a child..."you're going to believe what you want so it doesn't really matter."

Imagine God taking that approach with us? "You're going to believe what you want so I'm never going to give you the Word of God."

This approach is not able to build another up.

"I even explained that I am the type that might need to ask 3 different ways or times before I get it...this didn't seem to matter."

Most of us are that way. God spent thousands of years repeating Himself to all of us through the scriptures. Every student in every school has to repeat hundreds of lessons in order to learn.

One last thing,

Do we want people to believe us or do we want them to be enlightened by the Holy Spirit and believe the Words of God?

Whenever someone tries to force someone to believe something, they're unknowingly stepping into the position of God. Jesus never forced people. He led them and He did so with gentleness.

Amen, well written dreamtime.

Scripture was given for proof -- yep, people can twist it, manipulate it, misquote it...that's why Scripture tells us to study it, meditate on it, hide it in our heart.
