In Ephesians 5, Paul exhorts all believers in this, Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit...
What is Paul speaking about here in this art of the passages? Just what does he mean by being FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT?
The Farmer
First might i say,that without the context for this verse many have used this verse to teach a lot of nonsense concerning the HOLY Spirit,and the things of YHWH.
We will need some context to 'RIGHTLY DIVIIDE' this section of the Word of YHWH.
I will post the short section of the context.
I will also be posting three different translations of the section of Scripture.
All three translations have translated this differently,and one is right.
Eph 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Eph 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Ephesians 5:18
(KJV) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
(KJV+) AndG2532 be not drunkG3182 G3361 with wine,G3631 whereinG1722 G3739 isG2076 excess;G810 butG235 be filledG4137 withG1722 the Spirit;G4151
Literal Translation Version
(LITV) And "do not be drunk with wine," in which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit, Prov. 23:31
Youngs Literal Translation
(YLT) and be not drunk with wine, in which is dissoluteness, but be filled in the Spirit,
Please notice how each translation differs to the rendering of the Working of the Holy Spirit.
KJV-Be filled 'WITH; the Spirit.
LITV-Be filled 'BY' the Spirit
YLT-Be filled in the SPirit.
Let us see which translation is the right translation.
We will need to be looking at How a person is drunk with wine,
'And be not drunk with wine'
A person cannot be drunk,IF there is not any wine within the persons stomach.
In order for there to be wine or any type of substance in any persons stomach,the substance must be put into the person by someone or something outside of the person.
The same can be said of that which the Holy Spirit will fill a person with.
KJV-'Be filled 'WITH; the Spirit'.
This translation gives the understanding that one contiual needs to be being filled with the Holy Spirit,seeing that we are people which have clay feet.
Clay is a pourus material,If the clay is not hardened in a furnace and glazed over with a ceramic glazing,then he clay will eventually be leaking out whatever has been placed in the pottery / person.
YLT-'Be filled in the SPirit'.
This shows that people are to be filled in their spirit with something,which has not been stated.
LITV-
'but be filled by the Spirit'
Here this Scripture is teling believers that the Holy Spirit will be placing something within the believers.
Namely PSALMS,HYMNS,Spiritual Songs,along with Melodies
unto YHWH.
The Literal translation has this Scripture correctly translated as Be filled 'BY'the SPirit.
The Holy Spirit will fill a person with the following;
:ROFL: dr phill, Igeorge that was funny, pj you know I love you bro, but hat was funny!
ella I look at it like this, if you have a picture and it is full of water it can not be filled with anything else, so being filled with the spirit implys that at first you must be empty , empty out your flesh and be filled up with the spirit, the spirit cant be filling you if you are full of flesh
You guys gave good answers, but can we go deeper into the strore house... so, Is there a similarity Paul is making here... between being filled with alcohol and being filled with the Holy Spirit?
If not, why do you think Paul would compare the two, being filled (drunk with alcohol) with being filled with the Holy Spirit?
Do not be filled with wine (meaning any alcoholic drinks), wherein excess, BUT BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT...
Yes, yes, when we are being LED by the Holy Spirit we are aware of His indwelling presence on the inside of us therefore,, we behave accordingly with respect of knowing that God Himself is living on the inside of me. We watch our behavior, our thoughts, our conversation.
Paul compared being drunk with alcohol with being filled with the Holy Spirit because the BOTH are of influence.
Y'all all know hwo we all acted fools when we got drunk in the world... therefore, Paul is saying dont go there anymore, don't allow the influence of alcohol(unclean spirit) to influence who you are in Christ. If we are in Christ, we should seek to be filled daily with the pwoer of the Holy Spirit, doing those things please to God.
