‎"Why is it that so many professing Christians make no spiritual progress, and indeed make no efforts to grow in grace? Why? Because they care nothing about it! To take up a mere profession is all they desire; but to proceed from one degree of piety to another; to grow in grace is no part of their desire... Is it possible to be a Christian and yet destitute of this desire to grow in grace? No, it is not! I tell you, it is not! If you have no concern to grow in grace there is no grace in you! You are a piece of dead wood and not a living branch! You are a spiritual corpse and not a living man! In this state there can be no growth for dead things never grow!" - John Angell James, "Christian Progress"

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Hebrew 10:14

Your sanctification is ongoing

*** Thank you Ryan...however my Bible does not say "being"...it says [ are ]...xo

Heb 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that [ are ] sanctified. (KJV)

"Them that [ are ] sanctified " ~ G37 ~ hagizo ~

If any believer read the entire post you could only come to one conclusion, that the author believes in salvation by works.

1Co 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

1Th 4:3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

1Th 4:4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

2Th 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

What do these verses prove about the word used as sanctfication?

I know many people who are adults by their age; however, they continue act immaturely.

We SHOULD mature in our faith; however, the Bible clearly shows there were many Christians who did not or did not as quickly as Paul thought they should.

"I know many people who are adults by their age; however, they continue act immaturely" - Has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic of Christian maturity. Nothing. It's your attempt at linking together two totally unrelated issues. Smoke and mirrors.

"We SHOULD mature in our faith; however, the Bible clearly shows there were many Christians who did not"

Since you have many examples, just show a few. Prove that they were true Christians and then prove that they never matured. Show it and prove it.

She just gave biblical examples (as well as her own personal experience) yet you ask for more-is scripture not sufficient?

Is it just me or does anyone else find this ironic-a thread on christian progress by a Calvinist-where was Calvins progress? He was a savage who was responsible for torture and murder-very Christlike. Some progress!!

What she perceives as her personal experience is irrelevant to the discussion. The Word of God is the authority not some anecdotal judgements on her part.

If even you could substantiate your claims against Calvin the man, what is your point? We aren't here to debate the life of John Calvin or any other man. We are here to talk about doctrines.

I guarantee that you have sinned so should we all just ignore your posts? That's the logic that you are trying to apply here.

Further, nobody here as ever claimed to be a "Calvinist". So, what is your point?

I'll write it again-SHE GAVE A BIBLICAL EXAMPLE!!

And we're here debating progress-and i find irony in the fact that Calvin was no example of progress in action. None.

And I can only infer the thread starter is a Calvinist-its only the Calvinists who deny freewill!

I thought u may have been able to figure that out Bob...but obviously I was wrong.

I honestly find your logic to be quite warped.

Try reading " On the Bondage of the Will" You might say it was written by a non-Calvinist since the author was Martin Luther.

You could probably use that as a launching pad for writing your own book proving "free will" since you could just argue and show that Luther was also wrong.

I have that book somewhere-however, I hold Luther in about as much esteem as I do Calvin. A wee problem with the Jews...

1 Corinthians 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

**** Paul is clearly speaking to Christians as he addresses them as "brethren" and he calls them "babes in Christ", that is plural so that means more than one..

Hebrews 5:12For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

****** here's another passage showing some stagnated in their growth, hit a plateau per se, and had to be taught some more...

Galatians 1:6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
