Why did Peter begin to sink! Matthew 14 verses 14 - 33
Posted : 30 Sep, 2018 05:01 AM

From the NASB

Matthew 14:14

When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.

Mat 14:15

When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.

Mat 14:16

But Jesus said to them, They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!

Mat 14:17

They *said to Him, We have here only five loaves and two fish.

Mat 14:18

And He said, Bring them here to Me.

Mat 14:19

Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds,

Mat 14:20

and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets.

Mat 14:21

There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.

Mat 14:22

Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away.

Mat 14:23

After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.

Mat 14:24

But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary.

Mat 14:25

And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.

Mat 14:26

When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, It is a ghost! And they cried out in fear.

Mat 14:27

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.

Mat 14:28

Peter said to Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.

Mat 14:29

And He said, Come! And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

Mat 14:30

But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me!

Mat 14:31

Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt?

Mat 14:32

When they got into the boat, the wind stopped.

Matthew 14:33

And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, You are certainly Gods Son

Hello everyone,

Yes the truthseeker is at it one more time, to get you to THINK about what you have been told, and what you believe.

This section of the Scriptures has been taught many times over the years, almost every person teaching from this Scripture says, the reason Peter had begun to sink was that Peter had taken his eyes off of Messiah. IS this true, OR could there be another reason.

The REAL answer will not be found in most of the translations, but in the language the Word had been originally written in, namely the Greek language.

The reason why Peter had begun to sink is found in verses 27 - 31

Matthew 14: 26

Mat 14:33

And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, You are certainly Gods Son!

Lets discuss Messiahs answer to the disciples seeing him walking upon the water, verses 26 - 27

Let us also discuss Messiahs response to Peters request to be saved, verses 30 - 31

I looked at 28 translations and only 3 have a good understanding of verse 27.

Another ridiculous quote by gracenotworkssaves:

"The English {Translation} denies the Deity of Messiah in this Scripture."{????}

Matthew 14:25-31: Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I, **DON'T BE AFRAID**." "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," Jesus said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, **HE WAS AFRAID** and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. "You of **LITTLE FAITH**," He said , "Why did you doubt?"

Jesus commanded Peter to walk on the water and **NOT TO BE AFRAID**. However, after Peter began to walk on the water he became **AFRAID** disobeying the command of Jesus: **NOT TO BE AFRAID**, and therefore sank since he had **LITTLE FAITH** because Peter was **AFRAID**!!

Jesus showed His Deity by **WALKING ON WATER**!!

Jesus showed His Deity by allowing Peter to **WALK ON WATER** as long as he was **NOT AFRAID**!!

Jesus showed His deity by catching Peter as he was sinking and bringing him back in the boat.

And then in Matthew 14:32 we read: And when they climbed in the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat {Including Peter!} **WORSHIPED HIM**, saying, "Truly you are the **SON OF GOD**!!"

Goodbye richard, there is no reason to talk with someone that refuses to learn.

Richard this is what you show by not wanting to learn.

Do not confuse me with the correct translation, because my 'faith' has been made up.

**SATAN AND HIS FOLLOWERS LOVE TO DEGRADE GOD'S WORD**!!

I Peter 1:23-25: You have been **BORN AGAIN THROUGH THE LIVING AND ENDURING **WORD OF GOD**!! All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field, the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the **WORD OF THE LORD STANDS FOREVER**. And this is the **WORD** that was preached to you.

Matthew 24:35: Jesus says, Heaven and earth will pass away, but **MY WORDS WILL NEVER PASS AWAY**!"

I John 2:3-5: We know we have come to know Him {Jesus} if we obey His commands. The man who says, "I know Him," but does not do what He commands is a liar and the truth is not in him. But if anyone **OBEYS HIS WORD**, God's love is truly made complete in him!

Matthew 4:4: Jesus says, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on **EVERY WORD FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD**!"

Luke 8:15: Jesus says, "But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the **WORD**, retain it, and by perseverance produce a crop."

John 17:17: Jesus prays to His Father, "Sanctify them by the Truth, **YOUR WORD IS TRUTH**!"

Acts 20:32: Paul says, "Now I commit you to God and to the **WORD OF HIS GRACE**, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified!"

Romans 10:17: Consequently, **FAITH COMES FROM HEARING THE MESSAGE**, and the message is heard **THROUGH THE WORD OF CHRIST**!

James 1:18; He chose to give us **BIRTH THROUGH THE WORD** of Truth!!

I Corinthians 15:2: By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the **WORD** preached to you. Otherwise you have believed in vain!

2 Corinthians 4:2: We do not use deception, nor do we distort the **WORD OF GOD**!

Ephesians 1:13: You also were included in Christ **WHEN** you heard the **WORD** of Truth, the gospel of your salvation.

Ephesians 2:17: Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the **WORD OF GOD**!

Colossians 1:25: I have become its servant by the commission God gave to me to present to you the **WORD OF GOD IN ALL ITS FULLNESS**!

Colossians 3:16: Let the **WORD OF CHRIST** dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom!

I Thessalonians 2:13: We thank God continually because, when you received the **WORD OF GOD**, which you heard from us, you received it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the **WORD OF GOD**!

2 Timothy 2:15: Do your best to present yourselves to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who **CORRECTLY HANDLES THE WORD ** of truth!

2 Timothy 3:15,16: 4:1,2: You have known the **HOLY SCRIPTURES**, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. **ALL SCRIPTURE IS GOD-BREATHED** and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of His appearing and His kingdom, I give you this charge: **PREACH THE WORD**!! {**WHICH IS THE ENTIRE NEW COVENANT AND NEW TESTAMENT**!!}

THE GREAT COMMISSION: Matthew 28:18-20: Jesus says, All authority in heaven and on ***EARTH*** has been given to Me {Not some RC Pope}. Therefore go and make disciples of *ALL NATIONS*...teaching them to **OBEY EVERYTHING** I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very *END OF THE AGE*!

I haven't looked at the Greek George... I'll toss my 2 in and research later. Y'all have a God Blessed and Holy Spirit Filled day or night wherever you are.

PPeter lost his faith~belief when the waters (life) became difficult ... He cried out for Yahshua / Jesus to save him...so he must have had some trust...but that's not what the LORD stated...it was about lil Faith...

Hi Jude, the answer to what Peter had begun to doubt is in verse 27.

Throughout Peters life doubt was his life.

However, God chose Peter to give the sermon on the Day of Pentecost and his many miracles and good works are mentioned 70 times in the Book of Acts. God also inspired Peter to write the wonderful inspiring books of I Peter and 2 Peter .

***DOES GOD'S WORD SAY THAT *ADDING** OR **TAKING WORDS** AWAY FROM GOD'S WORD IS A SIN**??

Deuteronomy 4:2: The Lord said, "Do not **ADD** to what I command you and do not **SUBTRACT** from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you!!"

Deuteronomy 12:32: The Lord said, "See that you do all I command you, do not **ADD** to it or **TAKE AWAY** from it!!"

Proverbs 30:5,6: Every Word of God is **FLAWLESS**, He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him! Do not **ADD* to His Words, or He will rebuke you and prove you a **LIAR**!!

Deuteronomy 18:17-19: The Lord said to Moses, "I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among your fellow Israelites, and I will put My words in His mouth. John 14:21-24: Jesus says, "Whoever has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me... Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching, My Father will love them, and We will come to them and make Our home with them.. Anyone who does not love Me will not obey My teaching. These words you hear are not My own; they belong to the Father who sent Me!" {See Deut 18:17-19 above}

They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid foundation on rock. When the flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears **MY WORDS** and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete!"

I Peter 1:23-25: You have been **BORN AGAIN THROUGH THE LIVING AND ENDURING **WORD OF GOD**!!
