Having grown up reading the Bible, I was never very inclined to believe that marrying multiple wives was wrong, and I will probably marry more than one wife if I am able to support them and their children.
I have been told it was wrong, but as I grow older I have yet to see anyone give a satisfying answer about why they think that.
I have been told that people did not know it was unwise to marry more than one wife until it was revealed in the New Testament. But I have read the New Testament many times, and I do not know what this is referring to.
I have been told that the Bible records instances of polygyny, but does not condone it. But I have read the Bible, and seen it condone multiple wives. At the same time there are many things that the Bible does not condone that we still know are not wrong, such as riding camels.
I have been told that a person who marries another wife does not appreciate his first wife. If you read the Song of Songs it does not allow this view. And since they do not give a reason why they think this, they could also say that a person who tries to have more than one child does not appreciate his first child, and I would have as much reason and inclination to believe that as I would have to believe their first statement.
Ya sometimes Topics can splinter off in different directionsAll points are worthy of discussion and I agree its difficult to cover it all on a forum.

For a woman to marry more than one husband is a crime worthy of death, and to lie with any number of men without marrying them is whoredom, and wickedness. This is clear throughout the Bible.
Marrying more than one wife, however, is not condemned in the Bible any more than marriage itself.
"Deut 17:17 - Neither shall he [[[ multiply wives to himself, ]]] that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold."
There are four things to notice about the command.
Firstly it speaks of multiplying wives, as opposed to having few wives.
Secondly this is a command to Kings, which is even more confined than the command to bishops.
Thirdly the command is not given because multiple wives are wrong, but because the king could fall into dangerous influences if he marries unscrupulously: "that his heart turn not away"
Fourthly, and most important, the command restricts how a king should use his authority, not what he should have. God gave wives to David, and gave Solomon silver and gold. These were not gained by taxes and oppression. The command is another warning against the corruption of human government through greed. Samuel warned of the same thing:
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants...
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day. 1 Samuel 8
The command does not restrict even a king in what he can possess, as long as it is not gotten through oppression.
And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days. 1 Kings 3:13
But if it would have been wrong to marry multiple wives for right reasons, it would have also been wrong to gain riches, as David did in fighting the Lord's battles, or as Solomon did by trading wisely as the Lord taught him.

The Bible writes about heartache in marriages with one wife as much as in marriages with multiple wives. Eve brought her husband into sin, probably the worst heartache in any marriage. Rebekah tricked her husband, and one of her sons had to flee the land for years. The Bible speaks of heartache because heartache is what it often speaks about.
It is far worse if you read all concerning multiple children. This is an issue near to me since I am the second of eight children.
The first two children born; and the one murdered the other. Later you read how Joseph's brothers decided to kill him, but settled for selling him as a slave. The heartache nearly killed their father. Later you read about Abimelech, who killed all seventy of his brothers in a hideous bloodbath, and only one escaped and fled the land. Then who is to say whether the contentions of Leah and Rachel were because they were the wives of the same man, or because they were the daughters of the same man?
Far more heartache has been recorded among multiple children than among multiple wives. If someone is hesitant to marry more than one wife because of the heartache that has happened in history, they would never dare, they would never even consider having more than one child.
Here is a blessing to consider:
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem: Ruth 4:11
It is clear that this would be a curse rather than a blessing if you only looked at the heartache. Would you like your wife to be blessed to be like someones two wives? I think it would be magnificent.
If no one has anything to say about these two verses then I will go on to the next part of scripture to discuss. It is rather long, and I am trying to do these scriptures more or less one at a time to be less confusing.
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem: Ruth 4:11
And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. 2 Samuel 12:8
