5 "Keystone" verses for the Doctrines of Grace..........

Cole got me thinking on what I would choose for five keystone verses for the

five points.

Now, this is a hard thing for me to do, because it is the very opposite of

systematic theology, where you put every verse in Scripture concerning a certain

topic in one list and look at what the ENTIRE Bible has to say about a certain

topic. This is the Reformed way, and here is an example of it:

http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/onsite/gracelist.html

I mean just narrowing it down to portions of Scripture is harder, but that is

still easier than just five keystone verses.

If you were to say narrow it down to two CHAPTERS I would pick

of course, Romans 9, and then also John 6. That covers Jesus' point blank

statements and Paul's teaching on the five points.

But if I had to narrow it down to just five,

here are my first choices after thinking about it, a bit......

1. Total inability or Total depravity.

The belief that because of the fall, mankind has a will that is enslaved to sin,

and is unable to repent and trust in Jesus.

John 6:44 "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him:

and I will raise him up at the last day."

Unlike the word "all" which can mean all of a set, or all of group, or all kinds

of people, the phrase "no man" means no being who is human, so that is Jesus

teaching TOTAL inability of man to come to faith in Him.

2. Unconditional election.

The belief that God chooses individuals for Himself, and that His choice is NOT

based upon anything other than God's choice.

Romans 9:11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good

or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of

works, but of him that calleth;)

Paul says this three times in three different ways in Romans 9.

3. Limited atonement.

The belief that Jesus died specifically for the elect, and literally paid for

all their sins AT the cross, not potentially, but ACTUALLY at that moment.

John 10:15 "....I lay down my life for the sheep."

Jesus talked specifically and repeatedly about "the sheep" that were "given" to

Him by the Father, and how those who did not believe, did not believe, not

because of their freewill choice, but rather

"Because you are not of my sheep". It was ALWAYS a specific GROUP of people

that Jesus came for.

4. Irresistible Grace.

The idea that God gives a totally spiritually dead person a new heart that

produces faith and repentance.

John 6:37 "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh

to me I will in no wise cast out."

Here is an example of the word "all" not meaning "everyone who ever lived", but

rather all of a group. All that the Father has given to Jesus WILL....come to

Him. Like Cathy says, "resistance is futile".

5. Perseverance of the saints.

The belief that God will cause all of His chosen people to persevere in the

faith until the end.

Phi 1:6 "Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good

work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:"

Well, those are my keystone verses, and for the other believers in the doctrines

of grace on this group, if you have other choices, I would really like to know

your choices.

In Christ,

James

The apostle's doctrine to the church is very clear and is of course in agreement as Jesus taught while he was on the earth, in the parable of the sower.

Lu 8:5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.

Lu 8:6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.

Lu 8:7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.

Lu 8:8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Lu 8:9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?

Lu 8:10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

Lu 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Lu 8:12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

Lu 8:13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

Lu 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

Lu 8:15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Rom 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

These teachings well prepare a believe how to minister to the lost, and it will also build faith in the heart of the lost to be saved.

So Sorry !!!!!!!! The word "keystone" doesn't occur in the KJV or any other translation but the WORD " corner stone " { JESUS } does...

Matthew 21:42 ~ Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

Mark 12:10 ~ And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:

Luke 20:17 ~ And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

Acts 4:11 ~ This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

Ephesians 2:20 ~ And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

1 Peter 2:6 ~ Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

1 Peter 2:7 ~ Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
