WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FEARING GOD AND BEING AFRAID OF GOD

AFRAID OF GOD:

Exodus 20:18-20 The Children of Israel were afraid of God but they don't fear God. They asked Moses

19 "Speak to us yourself and we will listen, but let not God speak to us, lest we die".

20. Moses told them "Do not be afraid, for God has come in order to test you, in order that the fear of Him may remain in you, so that you may not sin".

When we are in SIN, we are afraid to stand in God's presence, Adam and Eve hide themselves from God after they sinned.

People that are afraid of God cannot obey, submit or walk according to the will of God, the children of Israel perished in the desert because they disobeyed God, they followed their intelligence and perished.

FEAR: means cowardly, terrified, anxious or respect.

1. To fear God is to stand in awe, to RESPECT HIS Might.

2. To understand the consequences of certain actions and avoid them.

Example The wages of sin is death. When we understand the consequences of sin, then we will avoid sinning. To obey God. Jesus said If you love Me you will obey My commandment.

1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fear is not perfected in love".

Love motivates us to choose to live our lives for God. The right kind of love will cast out the wrong kind of fear.

The fear of the Lord is the begining of Wisdom, when we fall in love with Christ we obey, submit and walk according to His will.

It is a Holy fear, not being a coward, or terrified, or anxious but RESPECT

Good word Scott. If everyone truly FEARED GOD there would be no sins, but man is not fearful of God because they can't see Him.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of godly wisdom. Godly fear is reverance to Him and a willingness to do our very best to obey and keep His commandments, statues, and principles to obedience away from sin realizing in respect what Jesus Christ did on the cross to deliver us from our sins, and He really didn't have to do it.

As it is written in Romans 3, "There is no fear of God before their eyes." which proves our guilt and lack of fear in reverance and respect to God.

Godly fear is respect, honor, love, and reverance. Being Afraid of God is ignorance of who God is in His grace, love, mercy and kindness.

But being afraid of God in a godly manner is to know that there is a punishment for disobedience, but many Christian believers don't really FEAR God nor are they AFRAID of God's punishment otherwise, as I stated, if there was godly fear f God there would not be Sins in God's house and among those who confess and profess being born again Christian believers. Many act as the fools, and take God's grace for granted thinking they can sin and be forgiven without consequences r repentance.

But Hebrews 12, tells us that God will punish us for our sins if there is no repentance, he chastises those whom He loves..

Psalms 14 The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.

Psalms 10. In arrogance the wicked persecute the poor-- let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. For the wicked boast of the desires of their heart, those greedy for gain curse and renounce the LORD. In the pride of their countenance the wicked say, "God will not seek it out"; all their thoughts are, "There is no God."

When confronted with God's awesome presence the inevitable human response is to quiver and cower. In fact, the Bible never records a direct personal encounter with God in which the individual was not visibly shaken by God's awesomeness. When God appeared to Moses in the burning bush, Moses hid his face and trembled before God ( Exod 3:6 ). When Isaiah saw the Lord in his glory and majesty, he cried, "Woe is me, I am ruined!" ( 6:5 ). When the risen Christ appeared to Saul the persecutor on the Damascus road, Saul prostrated himself in fear and trembling ( Acts 9:3 ). The Bible emphasizes, however, that genuine awe is primarily a disposition rather than merely an emotional state. God's person and his works of creation, providence, redemption, and judgment are astounding and demand both sober contemplation and humble submission. God's people are commanded to show proper regard for his power and dominionhis absolute authority to rule ( Job 25:2 ; Jer 33:9 ) and his power to perform what he will ( Deut 4:34 ; 34:12 ; 1 Sam 12:18 ; Hab 3:2 ). On the other hand, the Bible makes it clear that there will come a day when persons who refuse to acknowledge God's awesomeness will tremble and wail before his vengeful presence and his righteous judgement ( Jer 2:19 ; Zeph 2:11 ).
