as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby (1 Peter 2:2).

Peter uses the analogy of a newborn baby that longs for its mothers milk to describe the believers longing for Gods Word. Newborn babe is the English translation of the Greek word brephos, which literally means a baby just born. Peter is clearly talking about a baby that has just come out of its mothers womb and is dependent upon the nourishment of its mother to survive. And the instant a baby is born it has the God given desire to nurse from its mothers milk. This is what nourishes a baby and gives it the necessary antibodies to protect it from disease. And as a baby craves milk, in the same way, true believers crave Gods Word. This is the God given spiritual desire for all who are born of the Spirit of God. For the Spirit of God leads the people of God to long for the Word of God. Believers know, as Jesus said, that Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matt. 4:4). The believer is one who cries out like David in Psalm 42:1-2: As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. Do you long for the pure milk of Gods Word?

In Christ,

Pastor S. Henry
