Ever Heard of Exclusive Psalmody????
Posted : 16 May, 2012 11:35 AM

Over the years I've heard of exclusive Psalmody which is practiced mainly by Reformed Presbyterians and some Baptists but recently I was asked by a church to look into it and tell them what I believe God's Word has to say about it.

I haven't seriously searched the scriptures for answers yet, but here's my first response to one of the most common objections against this doctrine...

A common objection to exclusive Psalmody is that if you sing the Psalms, you cannot sing to or about Jesus.

My response, When Jesus taught us to pray in the New Testament did He teach us to pray directly to Himself or to God the Father? And arent all Psalms directed towards God the Father?

Therefore from Jesus own example of prayer, one could safely conclude that the Psalms are in fact just as appropriate for worship in this day and age as they were in Old Testament times.

I would like to hear what others have to say regarding this doctrine...

As a Reformed Presbyterian i know many of our sister churches believe in Exclusive Psalmody. I personally do not. I do not think there is anything wrong with it, because as you stated it is Praise to God, and what better to Praise God than with his own infallible word. I grew up in a Baptist Church singing hymns, so it is very difficult when we sing from the Psalter, but it definitively warms the heart to worship God.

I will be very interested in seeing what you find in your study.

psalmody (sam-d, slm-)

n. pl. psalmodies

1. The act or practice of singing psalms in divine worship.

2. The composition or arranging of psalms for singing.

3. A collection of psalms.

*** I've never heard of this being a "Doctrine"...Psalms were and are sung by the Hebrew~Israel~Jew to worship God...Gentiles also "sing" Psalms and "worship" God...As far as the not singing about Jesus part...Yahshua~Jesus isn't mentioned by this name in the Psalms...

It all depends on ifin ya Believe Christ Jesus to be GOD and the He became flesh...If the Scriptures point to Christ Jesus from Genesis to Revelations...and His name above all names is Yahshua~Jesus...well......Yall gota answer that for your selves...xo

Question?

If I am walking as he is in the light can I worship him in Spirit and Truth.

With this scripture:

Ps 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Phillip,

I'm not certain I'm understanding your point. Are you saying that the emphasis in worshiping God has more to do with a clean heart and a right spirit? If so, I would agree with you, but I would then clarify that the doctrine of exclusive psalmody in question applies only to corporate Sabbath day worship and not to one's private worship with friends or family.

So far, the root of this belief is being based in an argument over "prescribed" worship. In other words, if God has not explicitly prescribed something in the context of corporate worship, we as infallible men are not to introduce forms of corporate worship from our own imaginations.

An example of this would be Aaron's kids who brought unauthorized incense and fire before the Lord and were both destroyed by God for having done so.

Yes PJ...you can worship Him in Spirit and Truth...as All His children Worship HIM in Spirit and Truth...xo

If that is the case and you apply to the New Coveant as I did.

That person is not born again.

A Christian's heart can not get any cleaner, nor can their Spirit be any more right.

So again, no a Christian should not ask for what he already has that is unbelief.

Dljrn04,

Thank you for that link! That is an excellent article on singing in corporate worship. I just read it, but I'll need to go through it again if not several more times...
