James 3 (NASB)

The Tongue Is a Fire

3 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a [a]stricter judgment. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in [b]what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. 3 Now if we put the bits into the horses mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. 4 Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. 5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.

See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our [c]life, and is set on fire by [d] hell. 7 For every [e]species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human [f]race. 8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; 10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. 11 Does a fountain send out from the same opening both [g]fresh and bitter water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce [h]fresh.

Thank you for the reminder. The tongue is such a small organ of the body, but does such great harm. I think it goes along with Proverbs when it says keep the heart for out of it are the issues of life. If all we put in is the world that is what comes out of our mouth. If we are saturated in Gods word, that is what we will speak.

Good reminder...On this site, the fingers do the firing...we should apply the same thought to what we type.

Mark 7:20And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Too many people hide behind the 'anonymity' of their profile...unfortunately what they write reflects the content of their heart.

"3 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a [a]stricter judgment."

I wish this verse was brought to light and preached on more often. The Lord certainly does not gift many with teaching. To those he does, he charges them with a great responsibility. If more folks applied this verse, not only their tongue would be silenced, but their keyboards as well.

Good to see you back brother and thanks for your post. Like your new look even though its anonymous like mine  The message is more important than the messenger. Amen?

Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.

The core of that entire chapter has to do with eating meat vs. not eating meat. Some are convicted that they should not eat meat although there is no command not eat meat. There is also no command forbidding being a vegetarian.

Therefore, we are not to judge in such an instance....what some might refer to as a non-essential. To do so has the potential to create a stumbling block for another.

To apply those verses to subjects where clear law/word exists would be erroneous and totally out of context. Giving bad council, teaching false gospels or false theologies, wrongly dividing the Word of God, etc. will create much larger stumbling blocks. This goes back to the admonition in vs.3 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a [a]stricter judgment.

I am sure that you were already aware of that. I just wanted to attach context to those verses for the benefit of other readers.

Those two verses taken out of proper context would ironically have the potential to create quite a stumbling block

Matthew 12:34O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

1 Corinthians 10:31Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Got to love Jesus, eh? He never mixed words. Look at how he starts that off.... "O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil"

He calls them evil poisonous serpents - essentially devils. Elsewhere, he had told them they were of their father, the devil. He says that to the whole group of them, the generation.

Wow, that's some strong language, ain't it? Some, these days might say his comment was a bit "insulting" perhaps even "rude". Really, almost everyone in Christendom these days would say that it wasn't a very loving way to start the dialogue. Yet, that is exactly what Jesus said.

We all know, this is how he addressed some folks back then because we find multiple instances of it recorded of it in the Bible. We also know that there must have been many other times that he used similar language that didn't get recorded in the Word because John 21:25 tell us that.

Jesus is the only one qualified to use those words. We all could fall into that category on any given day. We must be careful not to think more highly of ourselves than anyone else.

No matter our education or experience, we are no better than any other sinner saved by God's grace.

This is a good topic and the tongue is a fire. We should all be careful how we talk about others.
