Killing the Third Part of Man
"Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God." Luke 9: 60
How can the physically dead bury the dead? Christ is saying to let those who are spiritually dead bury their physically dead.
In Matthew 15: 25 Christ said "I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
At that time the house of Israel was lost, though there was a small number who were not lost. Hebrews 11 talks about a small number from physical Israel who operated in faith, and we can assume they were saved. If we put Luke 9: 60 together with Matthew 15: 25 we can say that the reason the house of Israel was lost was because they were spiritually dead.
Man was created in the image of God (Genesis 1: 27). God is a three part being, so man would also be created to be a three part being. Man was created to have body, mind and spirit. Then the Serpent applied the dialectic to Eve and she and Adam fell, and God had promised that if they disobeyed him, they would die (Genesis 2: 16-17).
But Christ said "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10: 10 Christ came to bring spiritual life, that is, to activate and develop our third part, our spirit, which was diminished or dead. He implied in Luke 9: 60 that the house of Israel was spiritually dead.
With this knowledge of man's three part nature, and that man's spirit is in danger of being dead, or killed, we can look at some end time Bible prophecy.
In Revelation 9: 1-4 it says "And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads."
Demon spirits were restrained in what metaphorically is called the bottomless pit. The metaphoric locust-scorpions turn out to be the human minions of these demon spirits released from the bottomless pits.
In Ezekiel 2: 3-7 it says "And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
For they are impudent children and stiffhearted. I do send thee unto them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD.
And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.
And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house."
These scorpions speak words.
"That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten...For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.
He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white." Joel 1: 4-7
The army of locusts are said to have laid the vine waste and have barked the fig tree. What metaphorically is the meaning of the vine and the fig tree in scripture? Look vine and fig tree up in a concordance. Christ in John 15: 1-5 identifies himself as the vine and his followers who are in him are the branches of the vine. Then in Luke 13: 6-9 there is the parable of the fig tree. The owner of the vineyard, who is God the Father, found the tree bore no fruit and said to cut it down. But the dresser of the vineyard, Jesus Christ, asked to let him give it now life, to dig about it and dung it.
In Joel 1 the vine and fig tree represent the Body of Christ, or the elect of Christ. Joel's locusts are eating up the vine and taking the bark off the fig tree.
In Joel 1: 15, "Alas for the day. for the day of the Lord is at hand, and as a destruction of the Almighty it shall come." And Joel 2: 2 talks about this time in which the locust army attacks the vine and the fig tree as "A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains..." This is describing the end of the age.
So, the locust-scorpions of Revelation 9: 1-4 are attacking the sound doctrines of the Christians at the time of the end.
Revelation 9: 14-19 tells us "Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.
And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them....
By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.
For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt."
The serpents are a second group who are the human minions of the fallen angels or demons who were released when the bottomless pit was opened at the beginning of Revelation 9. Serpents as a metaphoric description of a type of person is found in Matthew 23: 33, "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?" Christ is talking about the scribes and Pharisees. For example, in Matthew 23: 13 he says "But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in." The serpents in the end time scenario are doing the same thing the Pharisees did, prevent those under them from entering into the Kingdom of God.
At the end of Matthew 23, right before the great Olivet discourse he says "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate."
In Revelation 9: 18 "By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths."
The metaphoric language here reveals an important point, that the third part of men was killed by fire, smoke and brimstone which cane out of the mouths of the metaphoric army of horsemen, which is said to number two hundred thousand thousand. The metaphoric fire, smoke and brimstone coming out of the mouths of this huge "army" is words. How can words literally and physically kill one third of all men living then?
The huge "army" of horsemen kill the third part of man, his spirit.
The next verse, Revelation 9: 19, identifies these members of the huge army of horsemen as having tails like serpents. In other words, the horsemen are the serpents. Since they kill man's third part, which is his spirit, they must be false prophets. The army of two hundred thousand thousand are all false prophets, and are the leaders of apostasy in the end times, the serpents. The locust-scorpions appear to be their followers, those deceived by their false doctrines.
Lets go on to Revelation 12. The metaphoric woman goes into a metaphoric wilderness in verse 6 and verse 14. In Verse 15, the serpent casts out of his mouth "...water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood." But in verse 16, the earth helped the women and swallowed up the flood.
Then Revelation 12: 17 says "And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ."
The woman has to represent Israel reborn in Christ, and the remnant, in the last days, are the few who are restoring Israel reborn in Chris, after the falling away has been completed, after the transgressors have come to the full (Daniel 8: 23)..
Again, as in Revelation 9: 18-19 the attack upon Christians comes from the mouth. Revelation 12: 15 the serpent cast the flood out of his mouth. This flood is a flood of words spoken by the army of false prophets to deceive the locust-scopions, and others.
Then, in Revelation 11: 3, "And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth."
Remember that the Greek word in Revelation 11: 3, martusin, from martus, means both witness and martyr.
So in Revelation 11: 7-8, "And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified."
But - following the use of "kill" of "slay" in Revelation 9: 15, 18, the beast who got out of the bottomless pit when it was opened in Revelation 9: 1-2, and who inspires the army of false prophets to speak lies, does not physically kill the metaphoric two witnesses. The beast, representing many false prophets, kills their third part, their spirit. And their dead bodies, the people without spirit, and without the Holy Spirit, lie in that Jerusalem which is called Sodom and Egypt, that is, in the churches which have at this time been in false doctrines for decades. In Luke 13: 21, " It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened, " the word "till" indicates that this leavening of the churches takes place over time, "until the whole was leavened.".
Revelation 20: 1-3 talks about an angel who restrains Satan in the bottomless pit, for a thousand years. "...till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed for a little season." The little season begins in Revelation 9: 1-2 when the bottomless pit is opened and the army of false teachers go out to deceive the people in the churches.
The little season is the same as the falling away of II Thessalonians 2: 3-4. Its the same as the overflowing scourge of Isaiah 28: 15, where those who have made a covenant with death and hell, claim the scourge will not come on them because they have made lies their refuge.
The little season is the same as the indignation in Isaiah 26: 20, where God's people are told to go into their chambers and shut the doors, representing going into the truth.
Its the same as the overspreading of abominations in Daniel 9: 27.
There are several New Testament texts which show that people who are born again by the Holy Spirit have a human spirit. "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:" Romans 8: 16
I Corinthians 2: 11: "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."
"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." I Corinthians 2: 14. Man without a spirit does not discern the things of God.
"It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife....To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus." I Corinthians 5: 1, 5
I Corinthians 15: 45 says "And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit." Christ, the quickening spirit, can re-create man's spirit.
Paul in I Thessalonians 5: 23 says "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."
James 2: 26: "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
