Matthew 24: 15-20
The Abomination of Desolation
"And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.
10. And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.
11. Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.
12. And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered." Daniel 8: 9-12
"And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate." Daniel 9: 27
"For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.
31. And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
32. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
33. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days." Daniel 11: 30-33
"Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.
11. And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
12. Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.
13. But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days." Daniel 12: 9-13
Matthew 24: 15-20:
"When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
16. Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
17. Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18. Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give (censured for CDFF) in those days!
20. But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:"
But under the New Covenant, the holy place is no longer the Jewish temple, but is the believers. Christ says in John 2: 19, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."
In the Greek New Testament, two words are used for the temple, hieron, and naos. For example, in Acts 26: 21, "For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me," hieron is used, which refers to the literal, physical building which was the temple. But in the verses where the temple is said to be Christ himself or the Christians, naos is used.
In John 2: 19, where Christ says he is the temple, naos is used.
Then, Paul says in I Corinthians 3: 16-17, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are."
The English word temple is translated in I Corinthians 3: 16-17 from naos.
"Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that commiteth fornication sinneth against his own body. 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?" I Corinthians 6: 18-19
Under the Old Covenant, the literal temple building was the holy place. However, in Ezekiel 11: 23. "...the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city."
When Christ lived on earth, he was the holy place, and after the Cross those in him became the holy place. This follows the same sequence that the light followed. First, physical Israel was the light to the Gentiles (Isaiah 49: 6). Christ is said to have been sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel (Matthew 15: 24), meaning physical Israel was then lost. How could a lost people be the light to the Gentiles?
Christ himself became the light to the Gentiles, to the world. John 8: 12, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." Then, in Matthew 5: 15 Christ says "Ye are the light of the world," meaning those in him, who have his mind and doctrines and are supernaturally transformed or reborn in him are now the light to the world.
So, the abomination of desolation, something which makes the holy place desolate, runs in the Old Covenant time as a desecration of the temple building and it runs again in the New Covenant time as something which makes the holy place desolate, which is
now the hearts (emotions), minds and spirits of those claiming to be Christians.
Now look at II Thessalonians 2: 2-4: "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4. Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God."
A man of sin, whoever or whatever he is, sitting in the literal and physical Jewish temple would be an abomination that makes the holy place desolate - in the Old Covenant time. In the New Covenant time, this man of sin taking over or sitting in the hearts, minds and spirits of those who believe they belong to Christ would make that holy place desolate.
One question is whether the man of sin is limited to Satan himself, or is also one of Satan's minions, either the spirit of anti-Christ (I John 4; 3) or the False Prophet of Revelation 13: 11-18, who represents many false prophets (Matthew 24: 11, I John 4: 1).
In Revelation 13: 12, the second beast, sometimes called the False Prophet, "...causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed." Revelation 13: 3, says "And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast."
Look at some New Testament doctrine on the rejection of Christ by physical Israel.
"And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." I John 4: 3
"Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
18. And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
19. And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
20. An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
21. Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?......For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
25. For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision." Romans 2: 17-21, 24-24
"I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan." Revelation 2: 9
"For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29. But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God." Romans 2: 28-29
"For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7. Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed." Romans 9: 6-8
Romans 11: 17-20 says "And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
18. Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
19. Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
20. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:" Paul is talking about those of physical Irael who were broken off Israel when they rejected Christ. They were not broken off of old physical Israel, but were cut off of the new Israel transformed in Christ, where the entry in John 3; 1-7 is by being born again in Christ.
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate." Matthew 23: 37-38
After the fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D., physical Israel was scattered, but some regathered in places like Alexandria, Egypt, and over the centuries soon after 70 A.D. Talmudic Judaism asserted that they remain the chosen people and were never divorced by God as Isaiah 50: 1
and in Jeremiah 3: 8 say, or that when God said he divorced physical Israel, he did not really mean it. Talmudic Judaism asserted that they were still God's chosen people but they asserted that Jesus Christ was not their Messiah. This is of the spirit of anti-Christ. And the 19th century movement by John Darby and Edward Irving, supported in the early 20th century by C.I. Scofield, especially in his 1909 Scofield Reference Bible, which teaches that God now has two peoples, physical Israel and the church where physical Israel remains the chosen people, contrary to I Peter 2: 5-9, supports that spirit of anti-Christ.
This form of man-made doctrine saying that the physical Israel which strongly rejects Christ remains the chosen people would make the holy place as the hearts, minds and spirits of Christians desolate.
With this in mind, we could look at the man of sin in II Thessalonians 2: 3 as being more of the spirit of anti-Christ than of the False Prophet, though the many false prophets have helped greatly to put that spirit of anti-Christ in the hearts, minds and spirits of many Christians.
Yet the door remains open to any individual of Talmudic Judaism to accept Christ and to become supernaturally transformed by him and his doctrines, to come out of strong delusion (II Thessalonians 2: 10-12), out of the spirit of anti-Christ. out of Death and out of Hell. Death and Hell are presented as being almost personifications in scritpture.
Isaiah 28: 15-18, "Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:"
Then in Revelation 6: 8, on the opening of the Fourth Seal, the Pale Horse, it says "And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth."
Revelation 20: 14 says "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."
But there is one verse in which Hell comes before Death. "I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death." Revelation 1: 18
Death is the spirit of anti-Christ, which denies that Christ as fully God came in the flesh. This is a trait of physical Israel, which - except for a remnant (Romans 11: 5) - rejected Christ. Hell as the second force of Satan is the False Prophet who teaches about a Jesus but it is another Jesus and another Gospel (II Corinthians 11: 14, Galatians 1: 6-9).
Christ came to bring spiritual life and it more abundantly. Rejection of Christ is to embrace spiritual death. Hell can be seen in this context of Death and Hell as being in false doctrines so that Christ does not know you where you have positioned yourself. "I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity." Luke 13: 27
