The religious spirit is also known as the spirit of Jezebel. The spirit of religion promotes doctrine that goes against the Word of God; however, it tries to mask itself as truth. Often times the religious spirit will attempt to attack new Christian believers because of their lack of Biblical knowledge.
A person with a religious spirit has a difficult time humbling themselves or submitting to authority in the Body of Christ which goes against the direct word of God. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. A person being deceived by the religious spirit is often bound by legalism believing they are free without walking in the freedom Christ purchased with His life.
The spirit of religion has its own set of standards which go against the righteousness of God causing lots of compromise for those under the spirit. Often when the standards of God's righteousness become corrupted, the people corrupting them don't even realize how much they are defying God for their own purposes. It is under deception in which someone with a spirit of religion will assume the practices they are doing are virtuous without looking at what the Word of God has to say.
Many people with a spirit of religion are able to feed off fears of others through manipulation to create a platform for themselves in which they attempt to promote others with a like mind while persecuting those following after Christ. A great example would be the Pharisees Jesus had to deal with.
In the Body of Christ overall, the religious spirit brings destruction and division instead of life to believers. Often times someone with a spirit of religion will focus on the faults of other believers to remove the possibility of others finding fault with them.
A great way to discern between someone who is operating with a religious spirit and someone who might be confused is to look at the fruit in their lives. If the believer has love, joy, peace, patience, kindness then it is probably someone who is just growing in their faith; however, if it is someone who is self consumed always having issues it is probably a spirit of religion at work.
God commands us in the NT like in the OT to be HOLY like God is HOLY.

A christian may have the Holy Spirit in them but that does not mean one cannot be OPPRESSED. We are christians filled with the Holy Spirit cannot be possessed but we can be oppressed.
