How generous are you, really?

There is one who scatters, yet increases more; and there is one who withholds more than is right, but it leads to poverty.

 Proverbs 11:24

A mother who wanted to teach her daughter the joy of giving gave her both a quarter and a dollar to take to church one Sunday morning. She told her daughter that she could put in either one; the choice was hers. As they were leaving church, the mother asked her daughter what she ended up giving to the Lord.

The little girl replied, "I was going to give the dollar, but just before the offering, the man in the pulpit said we should be cheerful givers. I knew I would be a lot more cheerful if I just gave the quarter."

That is how a lot of us are. We think, I am not cheerful about giving, so I suppose I had better keep it for myself. But we need to understand that God wants to change our hearts. We need to discover the joy of giving. And if we haven't yet discovered it, then we need to ask God to change our hearts because giving is a blessing. We can experience joy in it.

Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35). It is hard for children to wrap their minds around that truth. But as we get older, and especially if we become parents, we discover the joy of giving. We actually find more pleasure in giving than in receiving. The word Jesus used for blessed is a word that could be translated "happy". In other words, the Bible is saying that if you want to be a happy person, then be a generous person. If you want to be a happy person, then be a giving person.

Acts 20:35

In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Luke 6:38

Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.

Proverbs 11:24-25

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.

Luke 21:1-4

Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.

1 John 3:17

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love:hearts: abide in him?

17 But whoever has this worlds goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

18 My little children, let us not love:hearts: in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. 22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments:bow: and do those things that are pleasing :hearts:in His sight. 23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love:hearts: one another, as He gave us commandment.

Hi Versavia:

Thank you for the subject, now let us see what the Word of GOD Almighty says about this.

Mat 10:8 Heal sick ones, cleanse lepers, raise dead ones, cast out demons. You freely received, freely give.

Mat 10:9 Do not provide gold, nor silver, nor copper in your belts,

Mat 10:10 nor provision bag for the road, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staves. For the worker is worthy of his food.

Luk 10:30 And taking it up, Jesus said, A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell in with plunderers, who both stripping him and laying on blows, went away, leaving him being half dead.

Luk 10:31 But by a coincidence, a certain priest was going on that road; and seeing him, he passed on the opposite side.

Luk 10:32 And in the same way, a Levite, also being at the place, coming and seeing him, he passed on the opposite side.

Luk 10:33 But a certain traveling Samaritan came upon him, and seeing him, he was filled with pity.

Luk 10:34 And coming near, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And putting him on his own animal, he brought him to an inn and cared for him.

Luk 10:35 And going forth on the morrow, taking out two denarii, he gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, Care for him, and whatever more you spend, on my return I will repay to you.

Luk 10:36 Who, then, of these three seems to you to have become a neighbor to the one having fallen among the plunderers?

As believers are strangers and pilgrims to this life, let us live as such, remembering that you will not take anything of this life into the NEW Creation.
