Is all human illness caused by sin in the person's life?

Christian Scientists see a link between human illness and faith. Other fringe groups sometimes see human illness as being caused by sin or by possession by demons. Science has conclusively proven that all illnesses are caused by infectious organisms, or genetic or degenerative factors. Some mental conditions are known to be caused, at least in part, by stress, shock or emotional distress. There is no doubt that human illness is not, and never has been, caused by sins or possession by demons. Answer From a Christian perspective definitely not.

Jesus actually answered this very question in one specific instance of the man born blind in John 9. apparently some people in Jesus day regarded that sickness was caused by sin, that is, as God's punishment on sin. Since it was Jesus' own disciples which asked the question it was evidently a widespread idea among the masses, since Jesus' disciples were not from among the learned teachers of the day.

John 9:1-3 1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.2And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?3Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. Thus even Jesus did not blame the man for being a sinner. This is part of a wider issue in that some in Jesus' day evidently regarded any kind of misfortune, (including illness of course) as a punishment from God. This is discussed in a passage in Luke.

Luke 13:1-5 1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?5I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

So, in this passage twice Jesus said 'nay' meaning that He did not agree with their thinking but that they should consider seriously what had happened and repent of their sin while there was time. The "Law of Consequences"

The Bible speaks of the 'law of sowing and reaping' or the 'law of consequences'. This is expressed in a number of places as 'whatever a man sows that shall he also reap.' It simply means that every action has a consequence. In easy to understand terms, we know today that there is a direct link between smoking and various cancers and diseases due to the poisons in the product. Smoking inevitable has consequences as do many other behaviors which are directly linked to the action undertaken. In this sense all sin has a consequence and some sins will directly (either in the short or longer term) lead to sickness and in the short term to difficulties (such as the consumption of excess alcohol). However, while all sin has consequences, the Bible definitely does not teach that those consequences will always be sickness or that sickness is always the result of sin. Some people who are blatant sinners are in the very best of health and success materially. This was true also in Jesus' day. Generality of Sin In one sense only could it be said that all sickness is a result of sin. This is because the Bible teaches that God created a 'very good' world which was perfect in every way. This obviously did not include sickness which only entered after the fall into sin which spoiled God's perfect creation. In saying that sickness is caused by sin though, it is usually referring to specific sin and not the general existence of sickness in the world due to sin and the fall. In this specific sense the answer would be 'maybe' depending on the individual circumstances. It could be a direct result of sinful behavior. It could be time of testing which God has allowed either to strengthen a believer or to issue a 'wake-up' call to someone. In Paul's case in the New Testament his infirmity was there to keep him humble and useful to God. Answer Illness' as stated above in John 3. ("... that the works of God should be made manifest in him." ) came from God's whim. How He decides who get sick is not explained.

It is also believed that illness comes from Evil Spirits which by the way also came from God. see 1 Samuel 18:10, 2 kings 6:33, Isaiah 45:7, Amos 3:6.. And it was also believed that if you get sick, go to Church' Elders... see James 5:14-15, If you go to a Doctor instead, something bad will come to you. see 2 Chronicles 16:12 .

This was the belief of Old Christians and few modern day Fundamentalist.

But after Louis Pasteur discovered that (physiological) illness' and diseases are caused by Pathogens, the paradigm now shifted to science based conclusion.
