What Are You Longing For?

What do you need? What do you long for? What are you looking for that you cannot find? What void is there that is not being filled?

Do you think it can be met by another human being? Do you think that if you only had the right person, the right relationship - someone you could be secure with, someone who wouldn't fail you or abandon you, someone who could provide for you - that things would be different?

Oh my friend, are you looking in the right direction? Is your focus on the right person or thing?

Jesus Christ is the only One Who can give you the perfect relationship you're looking for. He's a Father Who not only promises to supply all your needs, but One Who is capable and willing to do so (Philippians 4:19). If you will believe and embrace this truth in the fullest sense, this year can and will be different. Your outlook on life can be radically transformed.

Your circumstances may not change, the human relationships you so long to alter might remain the same, but it will be a new year for you because you'll not be looking to another human being to meet your needs, but to God. And God never, ever fails. He cannot fail, because He is God.

He is always there. He always has the answers. Not anything nor anyone can ever drive Him away. Your personality, your behavior, your response will never alter who He is or what He has promised. He is God; He cannot change.

Have you stopped to consider that everything you are going through right now - every void, every unfulfilled longing - has been permitted by a sovereign God in order to draw you to the one and only wellspring which can intimately satisfy you?

If you are a child of God and have been miserable, dissatisfied, or unable to cope, it is because you have left the cross. Life is there - at the cross. "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it" (Mark 8:34-35).

If you have been miserable, dissatisfied, unable to cope, its because you have walked away in disbelief. If you ever want your deepest needs met you can't walk away! If you ever want to fill that void within, you must embrace the cross, clinging to Him.

In this new year, I suggest that you get a stone - a big enough stone to write on. Then with a permanent marking pen, write EBENEZER on it and say with Samuel of old, "Thus far the LORD has helped us" (I Samuel 7:12). Ebenezer means "the stone of help."

Put the stone in a prominent place where you'll see it every day and remember God's cornerstone, the foundation stone that He laid in Zion almost 2,000 years ago. Remember His words: "Behold I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed" (I Peter 2:6). Jesus will be your joy, and "the joy of the Lord will be your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10).

You can have a new year filled with peace and joy despite your circumstances! For "...If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor Him" (John 12:26).

If your happiness is wrapped up in pleasing God - in doing His will, in serving His purposes - then no person, except you, can take your happiness away.
