I'm a fan of Jesus Christ. And i cheer on the saints as we battle through this life here on earth. Singles are the most neglected "group" of believers in the church today. And the divorce rate in the church shows it.

I was a fan of sports at one time... big Cowboys, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers fan. but free agency and insane salaries took the fun out of it. It has become a world of idols. After years of disappointment as a Texas Rangers fan, they went to the World Series this year.I didnt watch a single game. I did glance at the final scores.

With all the suffering in this country, id rather pay for a meal and hotel room for a homeless family with children then support a bunch of grown men playing a kids game. OK, yes, we all need some liesure time. So i jump in my jeep and drive to see God's creation: waterfalls, beaches, mountains... to get away and pray and be refreshed. It spares me from watching sports programming with commercials usually containing soft porn.

Just my opinion.

I think I'm in the same boat as you. There are a few breaks in the clouds, but for the most part, I'm really not even half the sports fan I used to be. I read stories about teams or players that did have character, toughness, and grace under pressure, sportsmanship, hard work, quiet strength, and long suffering rewarded are my favorite aspects of it all. Seeing other people live these traits by their examples that you can emulate. Unfortunatly, like you said all we hear about are anything, but that. I guess that's what makes it so special when things like that do re-emerge like they did w/ Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer which is what compelled me to write the post. Maurice Lucas seemed to represent all of that and even though I wasn't alive during that era it made and still makes me sad that he is now dead for that reason. Chip Kelly is great, like really great, too though. I hope he stays with the Ducks for a long time. Good post.

Speaking of athletes with character and sportsmanship...I'm a huge admirer of 2-time Olympic Gold medalist snowboarder, Shaun White. His talent and abilities are off the chart, but he remains humble and kind in the face of his amazing success. I've had the pleasure of meeting him 3 times, and each time he's been nothing but sweet and accommodating.

The thing I dig most about him is his willingness to give back: he's been involved with St. Jude Children's Hospital for a long time, re-decorating their Target House common room with his brother, Jessie, as well as being involved with their "Thanks And Giving" campaign last year. Shaun was born with a serious heart defect that required 2 surgeries before he was a year old, so he feels a sort of kinship with these kids with life-threatening diseases. He was recently on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," again with his brother, helping rebuild a home for a family in Savannah, GA. He's also taken skateboarding to Rwanda, Africa, through an organization called Right To Play.

The most impressive thing about all Shaun has done is that he's only 24 years old! Many older athletes would be doing themselves a favor by taking a page or three out of Shaun's book...

I am a huge sports fan but I root for all the New York teams... So glad the Knicks has Carmelo, Chauncey Billups and Amare Stoudemire maybe now they will win the big one... The Jets and Reggie Bush were off to a great start but they have more chances to prove themselves... My Yankees are terrific and I hope they win another ring b4 Derek Jeter retires. As for Figure skating I am happy when the one who gave a perfect performance wins.

I thank all the athletes who give to charity b/c giving to charity also makes God happy.
