What are your thoughts on a man if you find out he is an accomplished martial artist? I'd like to hear all opinions. Do you see a difference between for instance, martial arts, and yoga/meditation? Do you define that man as a martial artist the same way you would define someone as a doctor, lawyer or an EMT? Do you see a difference between martial arts, and football, or any athletic sport for that matter. I'm curious what you think about a guy who pursues the martial arts, but has no past in military, or police force, or anywhere where self-defense is taught as part of the job.

The Martial Arts are really a Dance Form.

Tai Chi is the precursor of all the Martial Arts. It is a slow dance. There was a wealthy Chinese man that was sitting one day and became fascinated watching the animals how they moved and interacted with each other...how they defended themselves from attack. For instance he watched one day as a Swan was attacked by a snake. As the snake lunged at the leg of the Swan, the Swan lifted that leg and balanced itself on the other leg while dropping a wing where the leg used to be as further protection.

Over the years he developed a dance form from these movements. He also realized that there are no Right Angles in nature and incorporated this into his dance.

Tai Chi is all about moving energy through Time and Space slowly and gracefully. From this Dance Form by speeding it up and adding much more force came all the Martial Arts.

It is a Beautiful Dance and a great way to learn control of your body and to strengthen your Core Muscles. Also much Discipline is needed. I was taught Tae Kwon Do in the Military and I see nothing Un-Christian about it (if used as it was intended).

Meditation is also an excellent way to learn control of your mind and body. I personally will meditate on The Life of Jesus and find a Wonderful Peaceful feeling come over me.

Yoga is also a great way to keep your body limber and supple and strong as you age and if used with the Perspective of a Christian is not a threat to your walk with Christ.

The danger with these things is to fall into Eastern thinking and it's religion. As long as you stay Focused on Christ you will be alright. They are all Wonderful ways to exercise your body and to Discipline your Mind.

Peace

Steve

I agree w/ what Arch said... But as w/ anything, if it's become an obsession, then there's a problem.

Hey Skinnywhiteboy,

Your post made me curious, found this video on you tube, and there are others if you check to the right of that page

"Paraplegic" "self defense"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkmBpRaeb08

(There are loads of you tube videos on MA, SD, and military training)

I've not taken a yoga class, I watched a few program on TV, and I wasn't comfortable. If it was just stretching and that, great, but I just didn't care for what the instructor was saying, it just wasn't a comfortable experience. The meditation thing, I agree with one of the earlier posters. The bible says as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. Our lives are lead in the direction of our thoughts. Focus (meditate) on the word of God, thats what brings the wisdom, and the success.

My best to your friend, hope this helps darlin'.
