What's the best treatment for sunburn? I've been at the beach all week, and my face is currently falling off. Turns out, sunscreen can't protect you completely.

Well true but everyone else already covered the after sunburn remedies.

While my advice does not really help you now it will certainly help you in the future . . . unless you enjoy being all burnt and peeling like a rattlesnake :rolleyes:

Oh and I almost forgot . . . to answer your question aloe won't prevent sunscreen from working . . . it mainly helps draw out the heat, moisturizes, and adds vitamins like E into the skin to promote healing.

Sunburn compounds overtime so if you were burnt on the first day and went out again the next then you just got more burnt.

Oh you probably already know this but just in case . . . you can still get burnt on a cloudy day because the burn comes from the ultraviolet rays and not the visible light.

Here's a remedy no one shared. Learned it from my grand-ma. Put vinegar on a cotton ball and dab on the sun burn. It eases the burn and stinging. Also stops a lot of the peeling. You may not smell like a rose, but it works!

Ive only burned twice in my life. Both times, after burning, I got to travel in unairconditioned transportation for days on end (seemed like eternity). Tulip honey, I really feel for you. In the evening when you get back to your evening abode, run a nice cold bathtub full of water. Sadly, you can't soak too long or your skin will dry out more. But, it sounds like you are still out and about during the day...so the cold bath would help take some of the heat from your skin and provide a bit of relief. Praying for your relief from the pain and discomfort soon.

I have heard of many remedies, mostly using herbs. If you have an herbal store try getting some dried and adding to a bath or wash along with the suggestions below.

Aloe is great, apple cider vinegar is better than white vinegar, and here is a list of other good herbs;

~Mullein: Burns. Apply juice of mullein leaves mixed with apple cider vinegar.

~Chickweed: Boils, scalds, burns, inflamed or sore eyes, ulcerations, mouth or throat, deafness, wounds, etc. Use the decoction warm as a wash and apply the ointment (the ointment may be used externally and internally).

~Wheat Grass Chlorophyll: Skin--Burns, skin abrasions, bruises, wounds: The wheat grass chlorophyll has both healing and antiseptic characteristics. The chlorophyll is applied either directly onto the afflicted surface, or, it is soaked in a cloth and bandaged to the area. At the same time, the chlorophyll should be taken internally.

~Comfrey Paste: The following paste formula can be used for the mildest to the most severe third-degree burns with assurance of success, if used as instructed. This paste has been used by hundreds of people with great success. It is made as follows: to equal parts of liquid honey and wheat germ oil, blend in finely chopped or powdered fresh or dried comfrey leaf or root. When the mixture is the consistency of a heavy spreadable paste it is ready to use. Apply it a half-inch thick or more over the entire area that has been burned, scalded, etc. Cover with gauze and bandage lightly. Observe area from day to day and if paste has been absorbed add more on top of the original application. Do not remove original, just add to it when needed. This paste will keep well for many months at room temperature if kept in a tightly closed jar. Always have it on hand for emergencies. You might want to carry a small jar on trips in case of emergency. If the paste is not available, submerge the burned area in cold water and leave it there as long as possible to take the heat out, or keep cold wet compresses over the burned area. If honey, wheat germ oil, or olive oil are available, use them to saturate the area completely, keeping it well soaked in the honey or oil until healed. The gel from the aloe vera plant promotes the healing of burns. These are all good, but nothing can compare to the comfrey paste.

These work very well, I have used oatmeal to along with a few of the other remedies with great success. The page I got this info from was Dr. Christopher's Herbal Legacy, click on sunburns and burns.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help guys. At this point, the pain is mostly gone, but I have what looks like a second degree burn on my forehead, which is slowly crinkling off. I keep putting lotion on it so hopefully the new skin underneath doesn't scar.

to keep the scarring down, corona is your friend. not the beer, but the ointment. it is a yellow and red tub or tube. in it is a yellow paste that is super sticky. that stuff, when applied to ouchies will keep down the scarring. it is also good for keeping down infections and stopping hangnails.
