But seek ye first the kingdom of God...(Mathew 6:33)
Posted : 19 Aug, 2012 11:55 AM

When I was growing up, my parents used to refer to this verse whenever they got a chance to talk/advice me.Well, it made a lot of sense then but now it seems so...

I was thinking this morning about this verse and i imagine that "all these things" include spouse, kids, jobs, good health...right? OK. I know of some people who have sought the Lord earnestly and served him diligently and yet they do not seem to be getting "all these things". Some of them are still single, not growing any younger and yet they want to settle down so badly, Others have been looking for jobs like forever, others are...

My question is, for how long should one seek God before 'All these things" are added unto him/her'?

I think in the context the verse is saying that God will provide for all of our needs. I don't believe it's saying He will give us everything we think we need.

25 Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[g] 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

That is true, most of what we think we need is often desires, some of them worldly. What we need and what we will be content with are sometimes different, but the Lord's goodness, grace and will carry on.

Grace undeserved

Thank you for your response.

Well, personally i do think that this text "seek the kingdom of God above all else" cautions us to put God first in out lives, to fill our thoughts with his desires, to serve and obey him in every thing we do. this means that we should focus on God first so that he can 'focus' on providing for out needs. right?

Well, let us be realistic, which needs are we talking about here? OK. what are some of the things we think we need? (you said that you don't believe it's saying he will give us everything we think we need) doesn't it include good health, future spouse, children, joy...?

Well no, someone could come to faith in Christ and then die the next day. We are not promised a life free from sickness. Although the Christian life is marked by joy, it is that way because we have been saved from our sins and have hope of future glory. It's not because we know that God will give us a husband or a wife in this life.

Matthew 6 is about the spiritual life, not the physical. What at these things that God will give us? Luke 12:22-32 parallels Matthew 6.

22 And he said to his disciples, Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[c] 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,[d] yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, seek his[e] kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

32 Fear not, little flock, FOR IT IS YOUR FATHER'S GOOD PLEASURE TO GIVE YOU THE KINGDOM.

In my opinion, "these things" that will be added is the kingdom. I don't believe that God will necessarily feed us in this life. I believe it's spiritual...

"31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, Rabbi, eat. 32 But he said to them, I have food to eat that you do not know about. 33 So the disciples said to one another, Has anyone brought him something to eat? 34 Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. John 4:21-34...That is our food

5 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on[a] we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdenednot that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 5:1-5...Again I don't think we are promised anything in this life.

We read a verse like this and we do what we think the verse is telling us, right?

When we dont see results we place the blame on God , Right?

God makes promises to us and when we dont see the results we begin to doubt God.

Why not doubt our selves and ask God if we are truly doing what He requires.

Why are we so sure we are doing what God requires?

When it come to finding a mate I was believing and professing and doing. But I was missing something and was blind to it. It wasnt until God opened my eyes and I repented that things changed for me.

When I repented my direction changed and with that the results as well.

If nothing is changing in your life that is a good indication their is need for repentence.

Ask God what you need to repent of. Seek God to lead you in repentence then all these things will be added to you.

The Key is His righteousness. We often want to move in our righteousness.

Humbly,

Michael

I agree !

We also are to continue in seeking the Lord God that he may lead us in all righteousness.
