Have you heard of the new book Rob Bell came out with?

Kevin DeYoung summaries the main ideas here:

"Love Wins, by megachurch pastor Rob Bell, is, as the subtitle suggests, a book about heaven, hell, and the fate of every person who ever lived. Heres the gist: Hell is what we create for ourselves when we reject Gods love. Hell is both a present reality for those who resist God and a future reality for those who die unready for Gods love. Hell is what we make of heaven when we cannot accept the good news of Gods forgiveness and mercy. But hell is not forever. God will have his way. How can his good purposes fail? Every sinner will turn to God and realize he has already been reconciled to God, in this life or in the next. There will be no eternal conscious torment. God says no to injustice in the age to come, but he does not pour out wrath (we bring the temporary suffering upon ourselves), and he certainly does not punish for eternity. In the end, love wins."

Though I'm not familiar with the book, it sounds like he's teaching the belief that everyone will ultimately go to Heaven...I couldn't think of the term for that, but a quick Google search proved that I'm not the only one who thinks that, and they gave it a name: Universalism.

I believe that he is wrong, and his teaching is un-Biblical. Hell is very real, and people who reject God will spend eternity there. True, God is a loving God, and He wants everyone to accept His gift of salvation, but He is also a just God. Those who do not accept salvation will get what we all deserve: Hell and eternal separation from God.

But I think we need to read the whole book to get the whole idea. Maybe there are hidden messages on the book.

I find it humorous that a man may learn of the existence of heaven and hell from the Bible then refuse to believe what it says about them.

This is not a new heresy; Universalism has been around a long time.

If you read the book, you'll find that he's not exactly hiding anything. He says he believes in Hell, but then he goes and redefines it as how bad life is if you don't do what God tells you to do. A lot of his support for the temporary nature of Hell comes from playing a little bit fast and loose with the context surrounding possible translations of a word. You can't talk about how a word means eternity with God in one verse, but then the next, it changes meaning to something temporary.

I think that in trying to be loving and relevant, Bell has wandered too far from Scripture. Driscoll does a great job in one of his most recent sermons talking about Heaven and Hell. Give it a listen: http://www.marshillchurch.org/media/luke/heaven-and-hell

It doesn't sound Biblical to me.

I'm listening to Mark's sermon right now. I started it a couple of nights ago, but fell asleep during it. I

I agree with you all. I think a big part of the problem with views like this is that they focus on God's love while ignoring his equally important and absolute attributes of justice and holiness.

I agree, Anthony. So many "Christians" do this, though. In reality, they are worshiping their own god, when they do so. You're not really worshiping the one true God when you're assigning Him attributes that He doesn't have, or choosing to ignore attributes that He does have. It becomes idol worship.
