...which Books were to go into The New Testament?

Out of the 300 or so Books and Letters floating around claiming to be Inspired by God and some of them being Held in the Highest Esteem...where in Scripture did The Church go to to decide which Books were in or which ones were Out?

Where in Scripture was The Canon of The New Testament?

The English word Canon comes from the Greek word that means "measuring stick"

When the church formally recognized which books belong in the canon they used 5 primary tests

1 Is the book written or backed by a prophet or apostle of God Deuteronomy 18:18 2Peter 1:20-21

2 Is the book authoritive (sp)

3 Does the book tell the truth about God as it is already knowed by previous revelation Acts 17:11 Galatians 1:8

4 Does the book give evidence of having the power of God

2 Timothy 3:16-17 Hebrews 4:12

5 Was the book accepted by the people of God

Deuteronomy 31:24-26 Joshua 24:25-27

Colossians 4:16 1Thessalonians 2:13 ; 5:27

James replies:

First off, there was NO '300 or so books'. This sounds like a skeptic website claim, and I think the ONLY way they could arrive at that number is by counting Sunday school lessons, and sermons by early church fathers, etc.

Secondly, since a Roman Catholic asked this question, I have to deal with where he is coming from:

Protestants do not believe that human being are infallible, and Rome teaches that the Pope IS infallible.

So, Roman Catholicism teaches that the Bible is an infallible collection of infallible books.

Protests believe that the Bible is a fallible collection of infallible books.

Jesus said what the Old Testament canon is, so that was settled by Him. But the New Testament canon was settled by the early church through usage.

Yes, it is possible they left a book out that should have been put in, but I truly believe they got it right.

First off, you MUST know that the 27 books that are in your New Testament were THERE FROM THE BEGINNING.

There was NEVER ANY DOUBT about the letters Paul wrote, and they were INSTANTLY accepted as the Word of God.

Then you have the Gospels, the book of James, etc. There were a couple of books that almost did not make it, like Jude and John's Revelation. But they made it in, and lets not forget there was never any serious challenge to the canon in two thousand years.

And since again, we have a catholic asking this question, I need to remind him again that the apocrypha was ADDED to the canon by Roman Catholic church in response to LUTHER SHOWING them that there was no such thing as purgatory in Scripture.

Another blasphemous, CHEESY move by a POPE.

There are no "lost books of the Bible" etc, there were other Christian writings that were like a sermon or Bible school lesson, but they were never seriously considered to be the Word of God.

In Christ,

James

So James,

You are saying that The Church went

"Outside of Scripture" (meaning that nowhere in Scripture was there anything saying what was should or should not go in) and used what what She knew to be True from

The Oral Revelation given to Her by Christ Himself?

Having The Full Deposit of Faith...She compared what She KNEW to be TRUTH with what was in those Books and Letters.

Over many yaers and Councils The Catholic Church finally SEALED The Canon of The New Testament.

As for those "supposedly" apocrypha Books...they were there when Jesus Qouted from Scripture. They were removed by the Jews in 80 AD because they were too Christian and they used the excuse that there were no "New" Prophets after Esdras (I believe the name is correct)

But what is Important is that Thes Books were REMOVED from The Septuagint and The Catholic Church simply RESTORED them.

What was Once Sacred Holy Scripture and was REMOVED by man...was RESTORED by The Church.

Well...The Church will sleep better now that they have your Stamp of Apporval!

Or...maybe you could go back through all those Books and Letters and see if they...Indeed..."got it right".

After all you have "...hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years of Insights and Reflections".

Wow...I can see the Headlines

'Sir James DECLARES Three Books Left Out Of New Testament!'

The Catholic Church got it WRONG!!

Arch stated ~ As for those "supposedly" apocrypha Books...they were there when Jesus Quoted from Scripture.and What was Once Sacred Holy Scripture and was REMOVED by man...was RESTORED by The Church.

*** Yes ! I agreethere is scripture verses in the Bible { cant recall them at the moment } that Jesus quoted that referd to other scripture not in the books we have today...I was curious bout this while reading my KJV Bible and pulled off the self my Mothers Cambridge Bible [Scotland]...the apocrypha is included and a notation by the authors and publisher as to why...It is known that apocrypha books were removed in [ they stated 70 AD ] and our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus quotes from Ezra~ aka~ Esdrasthese books were a commonly read and quoted scripture while Jesus was here in the fleshand I must say its been interesting reading this Cambridge University Bible along side my KJVIts simple & straight forward University Englishguess this lil backwoods country gal has gone from A-B-Cs to the X-Y-Zsxo
