It's sort of more of a theological question rather than a philosophical question.
I don't know how to word it, so I'll put it as well as I can. Well here's the discussion or example of a debate I've seen on this.
Man 1: Jesus said to turn the other cheek, that is put up no resistance.
Man 2: Yes, he did... but is it Christian to allow someone to harm someone else, perhaps a member of your family or a loved one and not fight back, or put up resistance?
Man 1: If you belong to Christ, and are a child of the Lord then the Lord will be your protection and would not allow these things to happen to you or your family.
Okay, that's all. Which of these things these men are stating is right? Feel free to post any scriptures that come to heart.
This is not a question about gun ownership and whether or not that's good or bad, it's more about like the very idea of self-defense and what the Lord says about it.
If you don't want to post something here publicly, feel free to message me privately.
Man 1: If you belong to Christ, and are a child of the Lord then the Lord will be your protection and would not allow these things to happen to you or your family.
A = If you belong to Christ, and are a child of the Lord
B = the Lord will be your protection and would not allow these things to happen to you or your family.
I would say Job meets the requirements of A so A is true, but B is false for him. The problem is "would not allow". That leaves no room for God to allow. Therefore, Man1's statement is false and does not hold.
This whole thing needs to be put into context so we can understand what it is meant by turn the other cheek.
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
(Mat 5:38-41 ESV)
The statement an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth comes from Exodus 21:24. Its a statement about recompense. This gives us the context to which Jesus made the statement to turn the other cheek. He is talking about recompense not about violence. This is not a verse about defending ones family or oneself from violence. Its about making amends for what one has done wrong. Jesus is saying you should go the extra mile when paying someone back.
Jesus says, "All:devil: who draw the sword will die by the sword!
"Jesus said to His 11 Apostles, "If you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. For it is written: "And He was numbered with the transgressors"{Isaiah 53:12} and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in Me. Yes, what is written about Me is reaching its fulfillment." The disciples said, "See Lord, here are 2 {Not 11}swords." "That is enough." Jesus replied.
Matthew 26:30-34: They seized Jesus and arrested Him. With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "For *ALL* who draw the sword will die by the sword...But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"
And so the only reason that Jesus allowed the disciples to have 2 swords was so that the Scripture in Isaiah 53:12 would be fulfilled: "He was numbered among the transgressors."
Jesus said to Pilate, "My Kingdom is not of this world. If it were, My servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But NOW My Kingdom is from another place!"
Luke 6:27-29: Jesus commands, "Love :hearts:your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes:bouncy: you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you. do not demand it back!"
2 Corinthians 10:3,4: "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we:angel: fight with are *NOT* the weapons of the world."
The only weapons that NT saints :angel:may use who follow the New Covenant commands of Jesus is the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. A NT saint would not even think of joining the army of any nation and becoming a professional killer or defending himself with a gun. Unfortunately very few Groups such as the Amish still obey these sacred commands of Jesus.
I John 2:3-5: "We know that we have come to know Him if we obey His {Jesus'} commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone:angel: obeys His Word, God's love is truly made complete in him."
James 5:12: "ABOVE ALL, my brothers:angel:, do not swear--not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" by yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned!!"
Jesus commands, "Again, you have heard that it was saide to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' {OT law} But I say to you, Do not swear at all;either by heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is His footstool..... Simply let your 'Yes' by 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one:devil:.!!" Matthew 5:33-37
When you join any army and become a professional killer you make an evil oath to obey all the commands of you commanding officer! Such as to drop an atomic bomb to destroy a Japanese city which will kill about 100,00 innocent civilians and about 25,00 innocent children.
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Did he really just use the Bible to turn cowards into heroes and heroes into mass murderers? I think that now I have truly seen it all. :toomuch:
Man 1: My wife left me and took the kids. She said she wants a divorce.
Man 2: Oh, I am sorry to hear that, did she say why?
Man 1: Yeah, she did. You see last week two men broke into our house and raped her in front of me.
Man 2: Wow! What did you do about it?
Man 1: I put up no resistance just like the Bible says
Man 2: Oh! Is there more to the story?
Man 1: Yes, when they both finished raping my wife, they went into my daughters room and raped both of them also.
Man 2: Wow! Wow! What did you do about that? You must have been outraged by everything that was happening.
Man 1: I turned the other cheek just like Jesus taught.
Man 2: OH! I guess I have always had it wrong.
Man 1: What do you mean?
Man 2: This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
