What are the five solas, and what do they mean?
The five solas is a term used to designate five great foundational rallying cries of the Protestant reformers. They are as follows: Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone); Sola Gratia (Grace Alone); Sola Fide (Faith Alone); Solus Christus (Christ Alone); and Soli Deo Gloria (To God Alone Be Glory).
These five solas were developed in response to specific perversions of the truth that were taught by the corrupt Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Church taught that the foundation for faith and practice was a combination of the scriptures, sacred tradition, and the teachings of the magisterium and the pope; but the Reformers said, No, our foundation is sola scriptura. The Catholic Church taught that we are saved through a combination of God's grace, the merits that we accumulate through penance and good works, and the superfluity of merits that the saints before us accumulated; the reformers responded, sola gratia. The Catholic Church taught that we are justified by faith and the works that we produce, which the righteousness that God infuses in us through faith brings about. The reformers responded, No, we are justified by faith alone, which lays hold of the alien righteousness of Christ that God freely credits to the account of
those who believe. The Catholic Church taught that we are saved by the merits of Christ and the saints, and that we approach God through Christ, the saints, and Mary, who all pray and intercede for us. The Reformers responded, No, we are saved by the merits of Christ Alone, and we come to God through Christ Alone. The Catholic Church adhered to what Martin Luther called the theology of glory (in opposition to the theology of the cross), in which the glory for a sinner's salvation could be attributed partly to Christ, partly to Mary and the saints, and partly to the sinner himself. The reformers responded, No, the only true gospel is that which gives all glory to God alone, as is taught in the scriptures.
Today, the Catholic Church teaches the same essential perversions of truth; and much of Protestantism has seen a regress to many of the same corruptions, in many circles and denominations. It is a pressing need for Christians everywhere to reaffirm and champion anew the five solas which underlay and gave impetus to the Protestant Reformation.

Yikes. Who's contentious again? I find Godsjude to have a lovely personality, who always throws in a bit of humor and love to whatever conversation she jumps into, but it's easy to put our own interpretation on text.
I like your post, and I'd like to throw in a couple more things that Christians still hold on to from Catholicism and the paganism that was mixed with it during it's formation. It can't really be argued that paganism didn't seep in, all we have to do is look at Christmas and Easter and the catholic observance of Sunday as "the lord's day", the various statues and saints that replaced the pantheon of idols and gods that the roman culture worshiped. Purgatory and hell, as they're generally interpreted today, are also leftovers of greek and roman mythology. Catholicism has historically interpreted hell as a ever burning place, and that there are currently people being punished in hell right now and for all eternity, when the bible clearly states that the wicked are reserved "sleeping" in the grave until the last day, "the day of judgment". It's really kind of scary how much Christianity is still saturated with pagan-influenced beliefs. We still need to study our own beliefs, because even in the last days, God is still calling his people out of "babylon" and confusion, back to his truth.
"The concept of eternal torment in hell is nowhere to be found in the original Hebrew and Greek Manuscripts of the Bible, but it is found in the writings of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. For example, Plato (427-347 BC) discusses the concept of hell in his dialogue Gorgias where he speaks of eternal punishment. There can be no doubt that belief in eternal punishment in hell was a pagan belief embraced and Christianised by the church in Rome in the early years of the history of Christianity. Consider this quote from The Schaff-Herzog Encyclopaedia of Religious Knowledge, vol. 12, page 96: Retrieved April 29, 2007.
During the first five centuries of Christianity, there were six theological schools, of which four (Alexandria, Antioch, Caesarea, and Edessa, or Nisibis) were Universalist; one (Ephesus) accepted conditional mortality; one (Carthage or Rome) taught endless punishment of the wicked.
"It was indeed the Church at Rome which first taught the pagan doctrine of endless punishment of the wicked, under the umbrella of Christianity. The Roman Catholic Latin Church Fathers, Tertullian (160-220 AD), Jerome (347-420 AD) and Augustine (354-430 AD), all strongly believed in the doctrine of hell. These early Latin Church Fathers are highly venerated Roman Catholic saints who believed that Gods punishment of unbelievers (all those who reject Roman Catholicism) would be in a hell of everlasting torment."
Dr. Edward T. Hiscox, a paper read before a New York ministers' conference, Nov. 13, 1893, reported in New York Examiner , Nov.16, 1893.
"There was and is a commandment to keep holy the Sabbath day, but that Sabbath day was not Sunday. It will be said, however, and with some show of triumph, that the Sabbath was transferred from the seventh to the first day of the week .... Where can the record of such a transaction be found? Not in the New Testament absolutely not.
"To me it seems unaccountable that Jesus, during three years' intercourse with His disciples, often conversing with them upon the Sabbath question . . . never alluded to any transference of the day; also, that during forty days of His resurrection life, no such thing was intimated.
"Of course, I quite well know that Sunday did come into use in early Christian history . . . . But what a pity it comes branded with the mark of paganism, and christened with the name of the sun god, adopted and sanctioned by the papal apostasy, and bequeathed as a sacred legacy to Protestantism!"

Really ladies and gents? That's what you want to maintain? OK I got it.
I guess some members here will always draw their own conclusions regardless of the facts and they will do so along theological lines while feigning "love and sincerity" towards those that they violently disagree with. At least Donna is honest in her presentation -- she doesn't put on pretenses when she relates to others here. I always know where Donna stands. She is an honest dealer. I find that far more respectable than the "mob mentality" clique who troll the boards looking for contention. You know the ones, they always like to take cheap shots, little jabs, inject their vile sarcasm, (go figer, eh Martha :toomuch: ) and so on. The ones that are completely Biblically illiterate and yet simultaneously totally unteachable.Their combined reading comprehension skills appear to be that of a below average kindergartner. This is obvious from their responses which almost always prove that they have either A.) not even read the posts they are responding to B.) utterly fail to understand the actual content of the posts that they are responding to. C.) love to aggravate, agitate, misrepresent, and otherwise cause contention. or D.) ALL OF THE ABOVE.
That same mini "mob" will be the ones who eventually cry foul to the moderation team when they have been thoroughly exposed and totally humiliated for their own bad behaviors and their own false teaching. They are the group who hide behind all of the outward shows of "love and xo's" while inwardly they are ravening wolves seeking to devour by whatever means necessary those who earnestly contend for the Biblical faith.
There is very little real Biblical discussion here. It's mostly just "opinions" thrown out as "Biblical fact".
So, why don't you all just agree to disagree and stay out of each others sand boxes?
