"He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, To love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8

Job was going about his business, and he was an upright man, and so God was bragging about him to the devil. But the devil complained that the only reason Job was that way was because protected him. And God, to prove the character of Job, allowed him to be tested. Job suffered greatly, but his suffering has proven a blessing to every generation without fail.

Why do bad things happen to God's people? So that we may be conformed into the image of Christ. To begin with, life isn't fair. Life was never meant to be fair. It was intended to be hard, to smooth down the rough edges. But even with it not being fair, it is still excellent. Adam had a job, work to do in the garden, even before sin came into the world.

And you don't want fair anyway. Fair is us all going to hell for our sin to pay for it ourselves. Did you wake up in hell today? No. So you got immeasurably better than fair, just to start your day. So the next time you're tempted to complain about life not being fair, think twice. Is that what you really want? Your worst day on earth will be a picnic and winning the lottery compared to fair.

Very good question. King David, in Psalms 73, asks the exact question as you. But in verses 17-18 his understanding seems to increase. Please review the entire chapter for a full context of David's struggle and resolution.
