I have read in the old testament where God's people are forbidden from making a graven image.

You shall have no other gods before Me. 4"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5"You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me.

When we make images of Jesus that obviously cannot be accurate, do we take away from the truth of who Jesus is?

Hi, I asked my dad a similar question (he has A LOT of knowledge) and this is what he said:

Dad: "do you love your mom?"

Me: "yes."

Dad: "when you go somewhere far away for a long time. Do you keep a photo of her with you?"

Me: "yes."

Dad: "Why do you keep it with you?"

Me: "To remember."

Dad: "Do you ever say in your heart 'I miss you mom'?"

Me: "Sometimes."

Dad: "Why are you speaking to a photo? Is a photo your mom?"

Me: "No, mom is in my heart. The photo is for remembering."

Dad: "So, similarly we keep such pictures and statues of Jesus to remember. And to keep focused. Just because we pray in front of an image doesn't mean that we pray to the image."

He also told me that it was wrong back in the time of Moses. Because the people did not understand. They said that this statue/image IS our God. LITERALLY. But it is acceptable if you understand. Understand that the image is just like a photograph of a loved one.
