( Would love some opinions )

What does it mean when someone says they are God fearing?

I have heard people time and time again saying that they are good God fearing Christians and a question just popped in my head today about that statement.

What is it that God has put in us that we should fear him? I have been mulling it over all day at work and i can't help but think that this would be the anthem of a person who says that they believe in God but in reality doesn't know God.

We can see in scripture over and over that we are not to fear. The word of god has never put the impression on me that i should be afraid of anything coming from the Lord, so why is it that people say they are living in fear of the Lord?

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Pro 1:7

The word "fear" occurs 400 times in the KJV. "Love" occurs 310 times.

Fear in the Biblical sense isn't quite the same as in the worldly sense. Biblically it includes awe & reverence.

The following is taken from Commentaries on blueletterbible.org., by David Hocking:

What is the fear of God? I am going to use the Bible alone to tell you. Number one, I read in Proverbs 1:7 that it is the key to knowledge and wisdom. Turn to Proverbs 15:33 and you will also find the same thing in Psalm 111:10, that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge. If you want to be smart, really smart, really understand life and what it is all about- the meaning and purpose of it and how everything functions and works-if you want wisdom and knowledge, the Bible says, "you need the fear of the Lord." You might ask me, "What is the fear of God?" It is the key to wisdom and knowledge. Whatever it is, we desperately need it.

So you see, you have not asked a simple question, but one worthy of deep study & contemplation.

But to try to bring it down to a mere human level... Did you love your parents? Did you trust them? Did you fear their anger?

Something to think about.

Blessings in Christ,

Deb
