I actually read some really interesting things today in my Argument textbook (yeah, there's a class on Argument, who knew?) talking about the differences in argument between males and females, and it made a lot of sense although it wasn't exactly backed by hard science. Just observations that anyone can make. Men are competitive because they had to spread their genes and base a lot of their hierarchy on things like power, which can come from strength and being (or at least appearing) correct. Women struggle to make connections with people because they rely more heavily on others in the social structure than men typically do. In this way, women tend to focus more on consensual argument (non-confrontational, a desire to meet everybody half-way), whereas men tend to take the more traditional me vs. you route to assert their dominance. I think I just butchered my textbook through paraphrase, but hopefully somehow I made the point I was trying to make... It was a real interesting chapter though, I would totally recommend the book to anybody who finds talking interesting. Post Reply
