Are there any Calvinistic girls out there?

I do not really like the term "Calvinism", but it get's the point across with out having to write down every single doctrine. I just want some good discussion. If you do not adhere to the Doctrines of Grace please don't reply :).

Me! Right here! 5 point Calvinist in the flesh! I think man is spiritually dead, not spiritually sick. Thus, man could never make his way to God. This means that Christ had to do more than just die and wait to see who would accept him; it means Christ had to die for specific people and not only make a way to God, but give an individual the ability to come to him. This means that God had to choose, according to His own merits and good will, whom He would save. And because God is sovereign and His will cannot be denied, if God wants to save you, you will be saved. Finally, since God has done all the work in salvation and He cannot lie, if He has died for you and declared you righteous and made you alive, then you cannot walk away nor can anything steal you from His grasp =)

@twosparrows

The Doctrines of Grace are simply the teaching derived from Scripture that we are saved by grace alone and not by any human work. This is so that God may receive the maximum glory in salvation. If we as humans had any part in our salvation, then we would be able to boast before God that our works have earned us a place in his kingdom. However, we know from Ephesians 2:8-9 that no one may boast in salvation. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

This doctrine, also known as Calvinism, is summed up in 5 points and can easily be remember by the acronym TULIP. "T" standing for Total Depravity: This teaches that man was born with a sinful nature that, from birth, makes him guilty before God. "U" for Unconditional Election. This teaches that God chose for Himself a people before the foundation of the world called the "elect," who are based not upon their works but upon God's sovereign choice. This leads naturally to the "L" which stands for Limited Atonement. This means that Christ died with specific people in mind, so that He would receive a sure reward for His suffering as He died for somebody and not nobody. Those for whom Christ died have alone had their sins paid for and forgiven. The "I" means Irresistible Grace. This means that you cannot deny God His sovereign will and if He's chosen to save you then He will give you the means of repentance (the preaching of the Word) and the Holy Spirit will give you the gift of faith. Last but not least the "P" means Perseverance of the Saints. This is a natural consequence to all other doctrines because if God has saved you and declared you righteous (meaning all of your sins past, present and future are forgiven) then He cannot lie and take back His word, nor deny His own will.

That is only a brief overview and if you would like more information here are some good sources:

I'd wonder how you feel if a Denise Richards or Carmen Electra clone winked at you and she breathily told her how Jacob Armenius was just the most AWESOME spiritual leader of all time.

I had a Latina girl online, not on this dating site. who was an Evangelical diss me completely because I was a Pentecostal. Her exact words were that any consideration of me could lead to her being Unequally Yoked.

I basically wrote back sexpressing the thought that it was sad that her view of the Body of Christ could be so small and that I prayed she would mature one day out if it.

She looked a little like Eva Longoria too, rats! And in Chicago! Back home! i Ai chihuahua !

I will admit I have never studied this topic.

But some brief reading of this thread brings some thoughts and questions to mind.

* I would see where the Calvinist point would enable the "cool kids club". People boasting in their salvation in that they were chosen, you were not.

* Why should a Calvinist care about the lost? If someone is not chosen why should they feel bad for them. God doesn't mind, so why should you?

* If you are chosen then you can live any way you want. You can sin and not worry becuase you are picked by God and can't be taken away.

* Why should you ever witness to anyone? If they are meant to be saved they will and if not they won't. It's not in your hands, so no worry about spreading the gospel.

* Lastly what does a Calvinist do with John 3:16? God loved THE WORLD. That sounds like everyone. WHOEVER BELIEVES sounds like anyone has the choice to believe and be saved.

Shawn, you neatly summed up my biggest concerns with Calvanism and Reformed theology. I think that just how "extreme" the person is determines a lot of how they would address those concerns. The reformed group that I go to is not all that extreme as a whole, but there are a few members within it that are.

I'm enjoying this thread. And thank you, Margo, for pointing out that passage from Romans!

Shawn, many Calvinist believe that John 3:16 only refers to the elect. There is a 3-part video series just on John 3:16, and how the words "The World" does not mean the whole world, but just the elect.

Two other verses are that I think should be considered are:

1 Tim 2:4 "who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."

2 Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."
