I have a sad Valentine's legacy going on..

When I was dating my ex in college, for our first Valentine's Day (we had started dating the year before in March), I had a cake maker friend help me make a heart shaped cake with writing on it, a huge $10 balloon and a single red rose. When presented to him, he looked embarassed and (men can be soooo stu pid!!) actually said "why did you do this for me? I'm the man!" :MrT::boxing::dunce::toomuch:  It was always a source of contention even throughout our marriage, we couldn't ever seem to have a good V-Day, we couldn't get it together. Christmas and birthdays were great but V-Day was a no go.

Okay, so since I've been divorced (4 years in November), I have dated a few guys, only one seriously.

BUT I'M NEVER WITH THEM ON VALENTINE'S DAY!! What is that??????

Okay, so the question is; What is your favorite Valentine Day date, or ex-husband/wife getaway or gift given to you? I need to live vicariously through yall!

I actually have never been in a relationship on Valentine's Day. In fact, I have never had a significant other during any of the major "gift giving" holidays. The months from December to February I am always single. When I think about it, I've never been in a relationship with a guy when his birthday came around either. It's a little sad, but also a little ironically funny I suppose. I really enjoy giving gifts to people (although I must admit I've always found it hard to shop for guys) and I really like to bake things for special occasions. I guess those guys just missed out. For now, my family gets to benefit from my interest in cooking when I am home for the holidays. ;-)

I did have a date for Valentine's Day once. It was a few years ago and I remember being really nervous because I didn't know the guy very well at the time. It turned out to be a nice evening. He was super sweet; he paid for dinner and even brought me flowers. We ended up dating for a few months after that, but ultimately things didn't work out.

One definite positive memory that I have of Valentine's Day is that for as long as I can remember my mom has given my sisters and I small gifts on Valentine's Day. When I was younger she would leave them on the kitchen table for us to find when we got ready for school in the morning. It was usually a stuffed animal and perhaps some chocolate or some Valentine's Day socks along with a card. Now that I'm away from home I usually get a small package in the mail with a present from my mom sometime in February. It always brightens my day. :-)

Ah BG, can't help you out. My dad's birthday was Feb 14, so my whole life I always associated V-day with him, and did not attach anything romantic to it. My former husband used to get me a card, and he actually picked out pretty good ones.

No, my whole "holiday angst" thing is...... Thanksgiving. It is a HUGE family holiday in my family, and for several years I have been *this* *close* to bringing someone to meet everyone at Thanksgiving..... and it fell thru. I have the same track record with my birthday. Sigh.

Love the heart-warming stories, though. Keep it comin', girls!

My favorite Valentines Day gift was last year. It was breakfast in bed served by my grand-daughter. She made it herself and the cornflakes and milk were delicious!

I can't think of anything any bf (or ex-husband for that matter) really did for Vday, but my mom sent me an awesome balloon with a stuffed cow inside and balloons one year in high school. I was doing a cow phase at the time (any other ladies have animals themes - like for kitchen for instance? My current one is lady bugs). I've still got my cow - her name is Biscuit :)

And my dad sent me a big teddy bear in 2007. And he gave me a really pretty CZ earring/necklace set a couple years ago too. I think my stepmom has been working on him about his gift-giving skills :) And my birthday just happens to be on Valentine's Day too.

Back before I started dating, Valentine's Day was pretty much a big reminder that everybody had girlfriends but me. After I started dating though, it never was that big a deal. I'm normally not dating someone at the time, but for whatever reason I just don't care. Then again, there aren't really any holidays other than Easter and my birthday that are that special to me.

This Valentine's Day should be excellent though. I couldn't care less about having a date or not, but the first batch of beer my roommate and I brewed will finally be ready to drink! Nerdy hobbyists unite!
