What are your thoughts on a man if you find out he is an accomplished martial artist? I'd like to hear all opinions. Do you see a difference between for instance, martial arts, and yoga/meditation? Do you define that man as a martial artist the same way you would define someone as a doctor, lawyer or an EMT? Do you see a difference between martial arts, and football, or any athletic sport for that matter. I'm curious what you think about a guy who pursues the martial arts, but has no past in military, or police force, or anywhere where self-defense is taught as part of the job.

To me, participating in martial arts is similar to going to a gym. I'd be cautious about anyone who did either ........ dare I say religiously? At least 5-7 times a week would be a red flag for me. Because it means they are more focused on themselves and their bodies than in doing God's work.

I'd be very very cautious about a man who practiced yoga/meditation. Simply because those two things do not focus on God -- they focus on yourself. Again, someone who does that a lot would be a red flag for me. Just BECAUSE he may do it would only be a caution until I'd talked with him more about it, and checked out his walk with God in general.

To me it is like anything else - not the "thing" itself so much, but how much time you spend on it. Martial arts..... yoga.... meditation..... sports...... all those things focus on yourself and your body. Nothing wrong with taking care of yourself, but if a man is spending too much time on it, then it would be a red flag for me.

Being involved with martial arts without a prior history of law enforcement and/or military training doesn't matter to me. It is all in how much time is spent. My two cents.

Martial arts is a good form of exercise, and it's also good for self-defense (from what I've heard, anyway...I personally tried to learn just enough to defend myself, but ended up in a heap on the floor with my best friend on top of me...we had managed to trip each other up instead of take the other down!). But if it is done to the point of obsession, I'd be worried. Just like I'd be worried about anything else done to the point of obsession.

Yoga seems a little bit feminine, somehow. I can't really picture the kind of guy I want doing yoga! Don't know that it would be wrong (unless done to the point of obsession), though. I've thought about trying it just to build strength and flexibility.

Meditation is a tough one. As Christians, shouldn't we be meditating on God and His Word? A lot of the meditation exercises that I've observed seem to focus on other things, not God. Maybe that's an incorrect perception, I don't know, but it would be a turn-off for me if a guy did meditation in addition to or in place of Bible reading and prayer.

You have to define meditation.

The bible says to meditate on the word.

That is to study and pray.otherwise, to clear your mind of all worldly things and study the word.

Now, Chuck Norris sometime became a christian. I do not know when. he is into martial arts.:peace:

Chuck Norris is amazing. I've seen all of the Walker Texas Ranger shows, and it was pretty neat how the whole theme of the series changed when he became a Christian. It was always a good show, but the focus was clearly Christian after he came to Christ, and there were a couple episodes where he VERY clearly spelled out the gospel. No one could watch those episodes and not understand how to be saved.

I learned along time ago, If Gos has an issue with you doing it he will let you know!!!! If you believe God is alright with it, then He will have good come of it!!! As far as a girls perspective: Girls do this also so perhaps you are there for God work.

I've always been interested in Martial Arts. I don't relate Martial Arts to yoga/meditation. I see them separate. Someone who continues in it is someone who has discipline, at least that's what they say. If you stay in the right place with the Lord, you won't be lead astray. My question to you: Is your interest a strong one? Yes Chuck Norris is a Christian and so is Billy Blanks (Tae Bo) who acknowledges the Lord credits Him for his success. Blanks won a title from Norris, and Norris worked with Bruce Lee. Not that that's important here..It is an art. You're using your body, but you're also using your body in a way that affects your opponents body and responses with precise movement/motion. As for the military, I'm in awe of what these guys do, Spec Ops, Navy Seals, etc, (I dont believe their training involves meditation). But the whole point of Martial Arts (Im told) is self defense, where military persons could instigate. Personally Id look for a place that teaches just that (self defense (MA)) but not the meditation, I dont want somebodys religion. There are websites that give help on what to look for. (Maybe stay away from Do Jos like the one in Karate Kid I as well I'd say pray about it, ask the Lord to confirm your thoughts. He will. But don't brush it off because the bible doesn't say Jesus performed martial arts, although it wasn't invented, He could have if he wanted to, but He really didn't need /want to, did He?

I'm Just Saying

Hey Charrise, I appreciate your response. I've always had an interest in the martial arts, especially in the more "artful" disciplines. My roommate just had surgery to repair a fully ruptured Achilles tendon. He just got put in a "light" cast today. He's a really active guy, and he's looking at a year before he can walk right again. His right foot, so he can't drive. I've been trying to sit home with him, but we're both going batty after too much of this. That's why I'm wondering about this stuff. I'm wondering is yoga taught without meditation? And they got martial arts that revolve around USING your feet, like kickboxing, so I'm wondering if there's any focused on NOT using your feet?
