Unwritten Rules? ie : 'The Control of a Thread'

I have been guilty of this, but then had to check myself.....

It seems when someone starts a topic thread for discussion, they seem to act as if they are hosting it at their house. Therefore they have control over it, feel responsible for its content, and all must play by their rules. If things don't go how the original poster wants, they can correct and reprove the course of the discussion or shut it down.

After "checking" myself I am of the opinion you wind it up and let it go. As soon as you hit submit (interesting word) it belongs to everyone.

Any opinions, feelings etc....?

I agree, twosparrows. If a person doesn't want anyone to disagree with them, they probably shouldn't say anything to begin with. ~JMO

Eat,put on a coat and come back when you feel like playing by the rules!

Or...

What's for lunch? What's your favorite coat?

I think it's polite for the first few comments to stay on thread and not hijack it. However conversations take on there own life after that. So then it is fair game.

The thing is, sometimes people hijack threads, specifically because they have an agenda, and so the original post, if it's a question, never gets answered. This has happened to me before. And yes, I did try and redirect it so the question would be answered.

Well, considering that it is easy to start your own new thread, it is kinda rude to hijack it and take it in a whole new direction. Although I do agree with Tulip, if the question has already been answered, then some latitude is ok.

I would say that the person who posed the question does kinda own the thread, because they started in hopes of getting an answer.

Scrambled eggs and bacon!

Jokes aside, a total threadjack is inappropriate. If you ask for help picking out new boots, and I come in talking about the price of rice in China, that's usually considered rude and inconsiderate. If you're responding to another poster's response in some way or simply intentionally misinterpreting what was said for comedic effect, that's fair game. A little word play or discussion never hurt anybody. If you want a poll, ask your question in Facebook Questions.

Just a thought....

Sometimes a person responds in a way that to that person is completely on track and on target. However, to the original poster it may seem like a hijacking because the answer is not where the poster was wanting to head. The responder may not be trying to be difficult or funny, but simply understood the original post in a novel way.

Some people live in the box. Some people live outside the box. And some folks can't figure out what the box is, much less where it is. :)

I agree with ViolaKat

Some drifting is ok and should be expected. But not wholesale hijacking. You should really start your own thread.

2SP - it is not just you who needs to check themselves in this area. :goofball:
