Screwtape Letters, C.S.Lewis

'Context' ~ (One demon talking to another demon) (edited)

"In other words the humans are to be encouraged to regard as the basis for marriage a highly colored and distorted version of something the Enemy (God) really promises as its result. Humans can be deterred from seeking marriage because they do not find themselves 'in love' and thanks to us (demons) the idea of marrying with any other motive seems to them low and cynical. Yes, they think that. they regard the intention of loyalty to a partnership for mutual help, for the preservation of chastity, and for the transmission of life, as something lower than a storm of emotion. Don't neglect to make your person think the marriage-service very offensive."

Any Comments?

excellent book. should be a must read...after all, in many public schools, Harry Potter (the religion of witchcraft) is now required reading!

There is also a contempory book very similar but an easier reading level, and for the life of me I can't remember the title, do you know it Twos??

gotta stop loaning out books and not writing down who took em!

Shepherdess,

Are you talking about the Frank Peretti series? This Present Darkness and Out of the Darkness (I think). They weren't about marriage but they are fictional books based on the same premise written from the viewpoint of Angels and Demons. Old series, but good reading if you're into fiction. He also wrote a few others that I've enjoyed.

On the post:

The idea that being "In love" is perpetuated in this society. Young people are gauging their decisions on that alone. I think its nice to have that spark and romantic vibe but that is not the most important thing. The spark is icing on the cake. Below that, there has to be loyalty, a desire to help, and complimenting the other's strengths and weaknesses.

"the intention of loyalty to a partnership for mutual help, for the preservation of chastity, and for the transmission of life, as something lower than a storm of emotion" ---> indeed.. Many couples now are jumping to marriage because they are emotionally attached ONLY. I'm not s

aying that emotions are not important, but emotions come and go. The only thing that lasts is commitment which fundamentally contributed by above lists..

Probably one of my favorite books of all time, really gives us all a hard look at what is really motivating us and how far we really have to go.

Doesn't mean the storm of emotions is wrong, but it is really easy to put it on a pedestal and want to give up the second there is something not 100% fun happening in the relationship when you're expecting round-the-clock "everything is made out of candy because I love you!"
