Phobias...

I haven't seen a topic like this in a while, and my sister and I just saw a commercial on TV that reminded us of our aunt's phobia of clowns and masks...

So, what are your phobias? Do you know how they started? How do you handle them? (I'm asking this in a lighthearted manner...I'm not asking you to confess your deepest, darkest fears.)

I'm terrified of spiders. How did my arachnophobia start? I'm not really sure, but I think it was when I was about 10 and I was holding a trophy that had been on a shelf in my room for months. It was one of those tall ones with a long hole through it that was open at the bottom. As I was talking to my mom, she suddenly said "Put it down NOW." I was always obedient, but her tone of voice made me react super fast. When I slammed the trophy down on a nearby table, I squished a very large spider that had been living inside the trophy. UGH. My mom had seen it's legs as it started to crawl out of the trophy. Double UGH.

Ever since then, I've been terrified of spiders. I don't want to see them, touch them, be around them, walk into their webs, etc. I don't handle it very well. If it is ON me, I'll turn white as a sheet and come close to fainting. If I just see it or get near it, I usually do a lot of shuddering and screeching, and I holler for someone to come kill the spider. A few months ago at school, I discovered a large spider crawling down the hallway. I looked for someone who could kill it, but no one was around. It was up to me. I finally found a huge book and threw it on the spider from a couple yards away. That did the trick, but I was left with quite a mess to clean up!

There, you know my biggest phobia. Now tell me about YOUR phobias!

Ditto, with the spider. I'm not sure why, but I've always had a fear of spiders, especially Daddy Long Legs. Something about those creepy legs that they wave around in the air.

Although claustrophobia might be a close second. I suppose it might be due to all those movies where the person is in a room and suddenly the walls start moving in to squish them.

Viola, that's funny that you say that about Daddy Long Legs...they are the ONLY ones that don't bother me at all!

Spiders I can handle. Scorpions on the other hand....shuddering. And those suckers, I think they track me. Not sure if there is some pheromone or smell I give off, but a house that has never had scorpions will have them pop up while I am there. Hideous creatures.

I kind of like those daddy long leg spiders. It's the ugly and furry ones I don't like.

I do have a fear of snakes and of heights. I don't like to go too far up on a ladder.

I'm afraid of water, you know like deep water, not just water out of the tap. LOL. Guess because I've tried to swim and I don't like that feeling of seeking or having nothing to hold onto. Also I went to the YMCA as a kid and the instructor scared me to death making me go under and stuff. I don't like water in my eyes, ears, etc.

I'm usually okay with daddy-long-legs too actually.

My fear is quite similar to your fear of spiders, except that it is pretty much all encompassing of things that I would consider creepy-crawlies. I can handle little bugs such as ants or gnats or little baby spiders; and I can handle cute bugs like ladybugs, fireflies, caterpillars and butterflies. But big spiders or big beetle-like bugs terrify me. I have been known to scream when I'm outside during the summer and the june bugs jump at me. I once found a large cricket inside a bag of hairclips when I was getting ready in the morning and had to refrain from screaming so as not to wake my roommate who was still sleeping. Just this week I encountered I giant cockroach in the hallway of my residence hall; when I realized that it was alive I just about screamed. I couldn't bring myself to come near it; thankfully, I think someone else on my floor killed it. Now, I'm terrified that I'm going to find one of those giant cockroaches in my room. Just thinking about it gives me the shivers. If I do find one that big in my room, I will probably scream and have my whole floor wondering if I'm dying or something.

I'm also afraid of bugs with stingers because I remember being stung by a bee at a very young age. I'm also afraid of snakes and such, but I haven't really had any close encounters with them.

I'm like blueknight, I had swimming lessons as a kid, and they had me going in deep water, acting like I suppose to trust them, and wasn't comfortable with them. Anyways, supposedly most animals can just naturally swim, but I think since I can't swim, the fear overrides natural reaction.

Also another one, I hate using the phone. I would answer the phone when I was real young, but my older brother didn't like phones, so I fed off that, and ever since being a kid, rarely ever use them.
