So how do you feel about the new Gender-inclusive Bible translations coming out? The new ESV is gender inclusive. Even the NIV is changing their translation to the "TNIV" (Todays NIV).

Personally I am in favor of changing English Masculine pronouns to gender inclusive ONLY is they were gender inclusive in the Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. But some new Bible translations are going to far and changing everything.

So what do you gals and guys think? Isn't this intentional tampering with the text of the Bible?

For me, the real frustration is people losing the understanding of what is a gender neutral term. We wouldnt have to be gender inclusive if people werent so sensitive. It can be a little difficult for those who speak English to understand the gender of a word in Greek, since it is not necessarily explicit, but simply a commonly understood gender. English words dont tend to have a gender as much as Greek words do.

And speaking of gender, the meaning of that word has changed as well. It is words and objects that have a gender, not people. People have a sex.

I figure God is in control still. Yes, we have free will, but God is still God. We go messing around with his words too much, he will put a stop to it. As for the gender/sex issue.....good grief. That is my whole feeling. We have murder, rape, mayhem, kids going hungry, schools being shut down, families being split up, and those folks are all hung up on is God a boy or a girl. Hellloooo, God is God. I'm still working on staying on the path God wants me. Focusing on that issue, to me, is analogous to saying oh dear, I need a manicure when there is a range fire and every hand is needed on the burlap bags to put it out. So, putting myself on the firing line here and saying, they need to take that money, time, and attention and devote it to something worthwhile.

"Political Correctness ... is a term which denotes language, ideas, policies, and behavior seen as seeking to minimize social and institutional offense in occupational, gender, racial, cultural, sexual orientation, handicap ..."

The problem with trying to make the Bible PC, is that in the end you are still offending someone. Yes, sometimes, things may seem a little bit masculine, but so what. Many Romantic languages assign masculine connotations to groups when it is not clear if there are both male and female present. I would bot be surprised if this concept appears in the Germanic languages as well. To say that people cannot understand mankind means every human being and not just men is to say that humans in general are stupid.

Kat, that was my point about people not understanding gender neutral terms. The word mankind is gender neutral. The use of the word he when giving instructions used to be considered gender neutral, but now we have to use he/she (or as I like to ridicule as, he/she/it. If you are going to be politically correct, you might as well go all the way). Many words that are normally gender specific can be gender neutral, it all depends on the context.

I dont understand why the gender of a word has to be so confusing. We dont seem to have a problem with other words that change their meaning depending on context. Take the word trunk, for example. It can mean the nose of an elephant, a container, the back end of the car, the body of an insect, the body of a tree, or a major internet cable. No one seems to get the meaning of that word confused, but mention the word man and everyone has a conniption fit.

You are also right, Kat, that you will always get someone upset by trying to be politically correct.

Hmmmm, thinking that calling God it isn't the best of choices. Shrug, I would get offended if called it and guessing God might too.

Thanks for bringing that up Cobbler. I hadn't thought of that.

As for languages...in Spanish, if there are a thousand women, the feminine pronouns and adjectives are used to discuss and describe. If the number is 1001 and the one happens to be male, the whole thing shifts to masculine pronouns and descriptives.

My take on that has always been that the feminine is reserved for groups that are exclusively female. Nobody seems much worried about if a group is exclusively male or is mixed.

There are some neutral words and terms...but these are not used frequently in reference to a person. I have heard them used when the sex of the person was uncertain. So...there you have it.

A preacher once taught a message I will never forget. And it was So simplistic! The gist of it:

"Things that are different are not the same"

Since he said it about 50 times during the service, you will have to repeat it that many times and then you too, won't ever forget his message!

Scripture talks of sticking to the "old paths". The subtilty of Satan never changes...he will lead us astray a bit at a time if allowed (kinda like the proverbial frog in the hot water). If we believe as the book says that he will preserve his word, then how can we keep accepting books that are Different?

Things that are different are not the same

Things that are different are not the same...things that are Different....

(feelin' like your heard it too??)
