Sabbath 2/28/15 Daytona SDB Church Pastor Wray sermon Unshackled Mark 5:1-20

----- ----- ------- ------

This scripture is about a demon possessed man that people were afraid of. When the man saw Jesus, he fell to his knees, worshipping Jesus. He, the demons, asked Jesus to send them into the herd of swine. Jesus did this and the demons entered the pigs which then ran down the hill and drowned in the river. Today there are many people that cut themselves and this is a form of self-mutilation. The act of cutting oneself is usually done on the arm. At least 3 million people in the USA cut themselves. Many of these people are teenage girls and young women. They use razor blades to cut themselves so they can feel physical pain and get temporary relief from their psychological problem.

The man in this scripture cut and abused himself until he met Jesus. This demon possessed man lived in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones. Jesus met this man right after He had calmed the storm when in the boat with his disciples. Jesus had just showed his disciples that He had power over the natural world, the stormy weather. Now they were encountering a different type of storm in this many demons possessed man. The disciples saw a horrible scene where a mans life had been devastated by evil forces. A man that lived alone among the tombs in the graveyard. A man who cried out day and night while cutting, slicing himself. Demonic forces had occupied his life. Suddenly the demons saw Jesus Christ. Other people may not have known who Jesus was, but the demons knew Jesus! The demons were terrified when Jesus came and told them to come out of the man. The demons name was Legion and they were scared of Jesus. They begged to be sent into the swine but were surprised when the 2,000 pigs ran down the hill into the water and drowned dead.

Many people had long been running away from this dangerous possessed mad man. But Jesus did not run but approached him instead. Jesus commanded the demons to come out of the man the same way He had commanded the storm to be still on the water. Notice the demons inside the man immediately knew Jesus and called Him the Son of God. Yet, Peters confession of Jesus as the Son of God is still a long way off into the future. These demonic forces knew Jesus and knew the kind of power He had over them! They were named Legion and a Roman legion is about six thousand soldiers. There were a lot of evil demons possessing this man but they knew Jesus could destroy them with one word! Just as Jesus has power over natural forces like healing people, He also has power over spiritual forces.

The purpose of this scripture is to help us understand that there is nothing beyond the Power and Authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. Can you say Amen? Because of this power, Jesus can transform our pain into freedom. I suggest to you this morning that Jesus can transform your depression into Joy. You may not have the tragedy that this man had, but in every life storms are going to come. Sometime they are physical. Sometime they are emotional. Sometimes they are psychological. Sometimes they are spiritual. Whatever the storm is, there is nothing beyond Jesuss Power and Authority. We need to know that Jesus has authority over everything and we can trust Him. Jesus can transform your pain into freedom. Whatever it is that you need, Gods Got It!!

Jesus freed the man from the demon shackles he had been under. The demons thought going into the pigs was a good thing but the pigs drowned themselves instead. The men responsible for taking care of the pigs ran into town and told folk what happened. The town people were shocked to see the transformed demon possessed man. The man had become a clothed and calm disciple. Jesus has performed many miracles. The greatest of these miracles is when He removes sinful hearts from our lives. Jesus replaces them with new hearts where He sits on our heart throne. The most amazing miracle is when Jesus forgives our sin and forgives our rebellion. He adopts us as sons and daughters of the Most High God. There is nothing more important than saving a person from death unto life. Jesus did not think the cost to pay was too high. Jesus died on the cross so we can have Eternal Life.

Amen

The very irony of a sermon entitled "unshackled" by a sabbath keeper.

Good point Blondie one still shackling themselves to the Jewish sabbath. By the way folks YES the sabbath has always been Saturday. However, let me ask you one simple question. Can you eat, praise, dance and sing joyful praises to the Lord on the sabbath and still follow the order to rest? Of course not!

The Christian worship day has ALWAYS been on Sunday because of the Jewish converts who still wanted to rest on the sabbath the day before. Thus the non-jewish converts would meet with the jewish converts and dance and sing and feast to Jesus on Sunday, which has always been the Lord's day.

I thank my LORD and Saviour that He stood up before all in the Synagogue and spoke these verses in which He was quoting Isaiah found in vs 61:1-2

Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

***

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

*** I'm waiting for His 2nd coming so the rest of Isaiah 61 is fullfilled...:bouncy:

2b and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

:yay:

3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

4 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

:yay:

5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.

:yay:

6 But ye shall be named the Priests of the Lord: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.

:yay:

7 For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

:yay:...:yay:

8 For I the Lord love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

:yay:

9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed.

:yay:

10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

:yay:

11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

:yay:

*** Come Quickly LORD Jesus...Come Quickly...then we can all hava a Eternal Sabbath Rest in YOU !!!

@1mountain: Is that what they taught you about the Sabbath in Seminary? That Christians have always worshiped on Sunday? That you can't dance and sing on the Sabbath because it's considered work? Neither of these statements is true and definitely not factual. All, ALL, of the early Christians were Jews. They continued meeting on the Sabbath because that is what they always did. In fact many Christians continued worshiping on the Sabbath but many had to go underground during the Inquisition or the Catholic Church would torture them until they became Sunday worshiping Catholics or they died. Both Jews and Sabbath keeping Christians were persecuted this way.

Sunday worship by the Jewish Christians became necessary if you wanted to avoid persecution. The tradition of Sunday worship was put into full swing by the Catholics who adopted the Roman/Babylonian/Egyptian whatever, tradition of sun worship into the church. The evidence of this can be seen in the Vatican. There is a statue of Mary holding a child whose head is actually the sun. The Protestant church which started over 1,000 years after the Catholic church began, simply carried on the tradition of Sunday worship days because the new ideas they had did not involve breaking from the Catholics but reforming the Catholic Church. They didn't seem to have a problem with Sunday worship.

Today, we are told that we worship on Sunday because it's the Lord's day. This can only be if you think the Lord is the Sun. Protestant Christians are very good at ignoring the 4th commandment even though they seem to love the other 9, especially the one about Adultery. Take one take them all. Leave one leave them all. God, you know the creator one not the sun one, commanded his people to remember the Sabbath because it was also on the seventh day that He rested. Disregard that, no wait it was God's day, hmmm better not. Nowhere in the Bible was this commandment changed. In fact, Jesus said, "If you love me keep my COMMANDMENTS" What could those commandments be? Hmmmmm. I can think of at least Ten of them, one of which is to remember the Sabbath AND keep it Holy. Now, if you want to worship on Sunday for another reason other than the lame excuse that it's the Lord's day (which by the way is a convenient misuse of what Paul is talking about) then maybe you can find a different or better way to explain your way out of the Sabbath again. No matter what you come up with you will be defying the fourth commandment and will not be joining in on the day God rested the way He told you to.
