Are their typical differences between east and west coast americans?
Posted : 5 May, 2010 05:57 AM

I put this on the "ask a girl thread" but this is just pro forma. This post is addressed to all americans on this site.

What I would like to know, by curiosity:

are there many differences between americans living in one part of the country or the other?

I can understand that the climate and the environment are different but I would like to know in particular, differences in behaviour..... like if you are travelling to the other coast.... or up to the north, or down to the south.... are there "rules" or "dos & donts" that you should observe?

It might sound ridiculous but I am from a very tiny small country and even we (15 million only) are not at all the same in language, manners, greetings....

So I would really like to know IF and WHAT differences you have amongst yourselves in the USA.

Looking forward to your replies:waving::waving::waving:

Supposedly, people in the south are friendlier (to strangers, anyway) than people in the north...and based on my own experiences, that's mostly true. In the south, if you are driving down a road where there aren't many other cars, it is EXPECTED that you will wave at everyone you pass...whether you know them or not.

People in the south will also talk to pretty much anyone, pretty much anywhere. Standing in line at the grocery store, waiting for the fast-food order to be ready, looking through the hair care products or makeup in the store...it's totally fine to turn to a complete stranger standing nearby and ask "what do you think about such-and-such?" Not sure how someone in the north would react to that!

In the south, it's polite for a young person to say "Sir/Ma'am" to an older person. I've met people from the north, though, who consider that to be very offensive and insulting.

I don't know about east coast and west coast Americans.

Hey Sos,

Pianogal is right about north and south. It tripped me out the first time I went to Tennessee where my dad's family is from, and people were waving at me. I squinted trying to figure out where I knew them from and was told everybody is friendly like that.

I've never been as far west as California. I've been to New York and my experience was that the people were very rude. No one spoke at all and it's very crowded. People were bumping into me as we passed on the street and I was ready to fight. My Uncle started cracking up and told me that's how they do, they mean no harm.

I'm sure every one is not like this, but I've been to Washington D.C and Baltimore and some are snooty in the 'I can trace my ancestry all the way back to Pilgrims' type of way.

Here in the mid-west, a lot of black people are from the south, so they are very friendly.

Hope this helps.

I have lived on both the west coast and the east coast. But I live in the south and southern east coast vs northern west coast has subtle differences.

Southern east coast they will cross a four lane highway to ask you how you like the weatherNorthern west coast ehhh in you are right beside them they may talk to you.

Both groups are very nice people just southern east coast sometimes feels over the top if that makes sense. (which I adore by the way)

When I lived on the west coast I had to get carepackages sent to me of grits....they like cream of wheat on the west coast which I just couldnt get into

Also in the south we use sayings "you know what?" isnt necessary a ? most of the time it is just a sentence. Sadly Jeff Foxworthy hit the nail on the head in his thing about "you might be a red neck ..if"

The truth from Ohio judge it for yourself, I am a true buckeye fan/ football only. I eat wolverines for lunch and supper.A Wolverine is somebody who lives in that state up North. You know the guys who removed the 11 commandentment. Thou shall not be a Michigan Wolverine fan. We from ohio use Wolverines to go shark fishing in Florida. So, now you know about people from Ohio.what do you think,Dennis

A lot of the people I've met from California are very quick to tell me about how everything they do is so much better than the way I do it. "Oh, well in California we only eat vegetables. Red meat is sooooo unhealthy." or "Oh, in California, no one would be caught dead NOT driving a hybrid. How can you hate the planet so much?" I used to think it was just a stereotype, but then I started meeting people like that.

Michigan is not that bad of a place to live. I lived in Ohio for a year, and Michigan for 12 years. I think both states are about the same... most everyone likes to keep to themselves, and the Wal-Mart/Meijers employees seriously have no sense of humor! I do think the people on the Southern East Coast are pretty friendly, just going into a gas station I had a conversation with 5 different people!

I once dated a girl from Flint. When I went to visit her there, I was not particularly impressed. Then again, the whole "cut you to the bone and make you cry for mama" cold temperatures might have influenced my opinion.

Tulip - you are crackin' me UP, man!! You hit it with the California forlks. Yup. Things are different here. I spent 32 years in Washington State so it is still a culture shock 2 years later.

To answer the question --- yes. There are lots of differences. Southern States -- way friendly. Will want to ask how you are and how's your family and what about the weather before they get around to talkin' about anything else. Upper East coast - more stoic. Less effusive. Talk fast, go fast, don't understand why you can't just DRIVE to the next state for cryin' out loud when they visit out west. Mid west: ....... someone else can answer, I don't know.

West coast -- up north you get friendly and tree huggers and hippies and geeks and nerds. Further south you get vegan yoga-loving pot smoking sun worshippers who know all the latest songs and movies, as well as the geeks and nerds and beach bums.
