BC, I'm not sure if this is what he is refering to, but a thyroid problem usually causes a slow metabolism, causing people to be overweight.

That is a new popular excuse for being overweight, a thyroid problem.

Well I have an eating disorder: I eat more calories than I burn...

That makes sense, Cobbler. If a thyroid issue was a girl's excuse for being very overweight, I can see where it would be a problem.

My own thyroid is underactive, and I'm on daily medication for it. My doctor told me that while that may have been the cause of my gradual weight gain, I'd better not let it be an excuse for staying overweight. The medication is helping the weight to slowly come off, even if it still takes lot of hard work on my part. But at least the scale is finally moving DOWN, not UP.

Cobbler, for some people that is not an EXCUSE, it is an actual MEDICAL CONDITION. My best friend has been on thyroid medication since she was a child because she actually DOES have a thyroid problem. While she does have a weight issue, she eats an extremely healthy diet (Chicken, Salad, Veggies EVERY DAY, no coffee, soda or junk food) and exercises regularly...sometimes two to three hours A DAY. She has done everything she can to get rid of the extra weight, and still can't get down to a "normal" size unless she starves herself and makes herself sick doing it. Even then, she is not considered "skinny".

She is the most beautiful, sweetest, kindest, most loving, funny person I have ever met, but men don't look at her twice because of the attitude people have toward women who carry extra weight. She's been so hurt by men who treat her so badly because of it, she doesn't even want to try to have a page here.

It's extremely shallow and rude to generalize or condemn people for having a medical problem beyond their control. Where is the compassion or grace?

For what it's worth, I did find her attractive after I got used to it. It was just unexpected is all and not what she looked like in her pictures. Also for the record, she really is a good person, just too many things that happened in a really complicated situation and it didn't work out.

MyCrownIsGod, I did not mean to offend. My older sister has a thyroid problem and has difficulties keeping her weight down, so I know what having a thyroid condition is about. You are very correct that having a thyroid condition makes it almost impossible to keep the weight off, and in many cases just not really in the realm of possibility.

However, when I said that it is a popular excuse, I didnt meant that those who have the medical condition are simply using it to not deal with their weight. What I meant was that many people are using it as an excuse, when they havent even been tested for it. I watched a segment on Fox News by one of the doctors and he stated that 95% of the people who claim to be overweight because of a thyroid issue end up testing negative for it.

People turn the weight issue into rocket science, as if there are many complicated factors into why someone is overweight. The truth is very easy, even for someone with a thyroid condition: you eat more calories than you burn. For some it can be easy to lose the weight, for others it can be downright impossible. But people are not willing to admit to it since that would mean that their weight is within their control.

I was just trying to answer BCs question as to why a someone would turn a woman down because she had a thyroid problem, and I was just suggesting that he turned her down because the thyroid condition would cause her to be overweight, which was not desirable.
