Does this bother anyone else as much as it does me?
Posted : 10 Oct, 2011 10:50 AM

It really gets under my skin when a man's first contact with me is through IM. I find it a little irritating. If he sends me a message, I have time to go look at his profile and decide if I would like to respond to him. But if he sends an IM, the chat box pops up on my screen in front of whatever I'm doing. He's right there, expecting a pretty quick response, and then he wants to know if I'm interested. How would I know?! I wasn't shown that he had interest and given time to look at his profile and see if it is someone I want to talk to more. And I can't just exit out of the box, because if he says something else it will pop back up again. I find it very intrusive.

So...am I being a little over the top or does anyone else find this a little irritating?

Oh, it's irritating. Most definitely. Perhaps I don't have TIME to chat, or perhaps I'm in the middle of something else and simply forgot to log off of CDFF.

After several guys got a bit angry with me because I couldn't chat at the moment, I went to my account settings and turned off the IM feature. It's probably rude of me to do so, but I tend to keep an eye on the forums during the day while I'm at work...and I really can't chat live with anyone during that time.

Under account settings you can disable that others know when you are online so they will not be able to send IM.

I've never enabled the IM feature - too busy (even when on CDFF) to use it.

Some people on CDFF are probably just on here to CHAT.

I've disabled the IM feature!

It has never bothered me. I can click on his picture (in the IM window) and see his profile as I'm talking to him. But if you find it that annoying, by all means disable the feature.

I disabled the chat feature because it was bothersome to me as well.

some women do this too I'll be doing something and the window pops up over the top of the other windows. Some of my annoyances of the IM here isn't all about someone trying to chat with me when I don't feel like it. It's annoying that it jumps in front and automatically is the active window, if I'm trying to work on something and people IM me it is frustrating because I have to click off of the IM window and try to work and they send another message and it automatically becomes the active window again. Almost always it's when I'm trying to do something and happen to have CDFF open or I'm in chat.

The other thing that bugs me is when I get IM'ed and they proceed to ask questions that are clearly stated on my profile do people just see oh, your a guy, and you are in my age range, I'll IM you without really reading the profile. Or someone who is an impatient IM'er who if I don't respond back quick enough they get irritated. Not all people are like that but most times IM'ing with someone is not the only thing going on in my day. Generally I prefer to be asked if I'd be interested in talking through IM instead of just IM'ng out of the blue because so often those IM's are spammer/scammer.
