Don’t provoke them anger, but love them and care about them, even when they do something wrong. Love them and care about them like the Lord loves and cares about His children.

There are different concepts on love. But one of them is to love THE LORD our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and to love him first and greatest, then love all others as second and to love all others as ourselves. God does not like being second. God does not want to be number 2 in our lives. God does not want to be last in our lives. God does not want to be second in our lives. He wants to be first. Jesus says that if we love others more than we love him that we are not worthy of him. (Matthew 10:37) Similarly, he speaks with less loving words in Luke 14:26.

Jesus tells us to seek FIRST God's kingdom and God's righteousness. (Matthew 6:33)

Some say "Spare the rod and spoil the child."

Jesus says that if we love him, we will obey his teachings. (John 14:23)

If we do not love him, we will not obey his teachings. (John 14:24)

We will be recognized by our fruit. (Matthew 12:33 and Luke 6:44)

Yes, we ought to love our children. But it is not an anything goes expression of love and some forms of love involve discipline. You don't let your kids run in front of oncoming cars. You don't welcome your children to steal. You love your kids, you will teach them right. You don't condone gender transitioning. You don't encourage suicide. There are things we teach, and there are things we don't teach.

This thread answers some questions for me and I have to say I have no doubts your father loves you dearly. It's likely some of the things he trying to get you to do is because he's already made those same mistakes or saw others make them.

Your father wants you to be a better man than he is and gets no pleasure out of trying to make sure you do things correctly. If he didn't love you he would just let you do what ever you wanted no matter the consequences.
