Is "Once Saved, Always Saved" what the Bible teaches?

The Bible says "REMAIN in me and I will REMAIN in you" (John 15)

If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. (John 15:6)

Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. (Romans 11:22) NIV

or

Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in His goodness. Otherwise, thou also shalt be cut off. Romans 11:22 (King James)

Our assurance of salvation is while we REMAIN in Christ and CONTINUE IN THE LORD.

I agree with your premise W&T that you posted in your latest reply.

But I agree with you only so as along as you agree that it is God who keeps us secure because that is what he says.

Anyone who needs assurance of salvation need only examine the sanctifying work in his own life that Jesus began in him.

Also John provides the kind of evidence of one’s salvation. In fact, John refuted those who think they are saved but continue in sin because someone told them that “once saved always saved means.

1 John 2

Jesus Our Advocate

1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He Himself is the atoning sacrificea for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

3By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments. 4If anyone says, “I know Him,” but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him: 6Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.

With regard to your most recent reply, let me ask—Do you believe the verses about the branches mean that it is the Christian who keeps himself saved by bearing good fruit?

If you do, then you believe in works salvation

I’m not saying that’s what you believe. I’m sure you believe that salvation is a free gift—that’s why I’m saying that you can’t hold to the free gift of salvation yet insist that it is the Christian who keeps himself saved by bearing fruit on his own

You might think that I’m contradicting myself when I agree with you that we have “assurance of salvation” only so long as we bear fruit (ie obey).

But when we disobey, like Homeless Christian said, we might lose our assurance but we do not lose our salvation.

HC rightly made reference to fallen believers mentioned in scripture as examples

You brought some good Bible verses, LD.

One of the requirements in scripture is love. People fall in and out of love. People even fall in and out of love with Jesus. The first and greatest commandment is to love God with all our hearts, soul, mind and strength. The second to love our neighbor as our self. Love fulfills the Law. The requirements of the Law are fulfilled through love. Can anyone get to heaven without love?

The Bible says that if we hate our brother whom we have seen, how can we then love God whom we have not seen?

There are love issues.

Jesus says that anyone that loves him will obey his teachings, but that anyone who does not love him will not obey his teachings. (John 14:23-24) The Bible also says that FEAR OF THE LORD IS TO KEEP US FROM SINNING. (Exodus 20:20) and that PERFECT LOVE drives out fear.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18)

Some of us are working on love.

Philippians 3:12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,

Yes, there is a Bible verse for everything.

I am not the mark. I have not reached the mark.

No one comes to the Father except through Christ. (John 14:6) Jesus is the way.

Jesus said to pick up your cross and follow him.

Paul spoke of filling up in what was lacking in the afflictions of Christ. (Colossians 1:24)

Salvation is a bit of a work out.

Do you want to go to the gym with Jesus?

Yes, salvation is a free gift. We are saved through grace. We will also be recognized by our fruit, and God expects fruit. We do not want to bury our talent. We do not want to be as the worthless unprofitable servant. God expects fruitfulness. (Matthew 25:14-30)

Jesus tells us to bear much fruit.

The most fruit some of us bear is upon these blogs evangelizing the evangelized. But maybe some of us do better than that.

I don't see that any of our love has been made perfect. We all part from some Bible verse. CHRIST IS OUR HOPE.
