The Deity of Christ

Jesus is God in the flesh (John 8:58 with Exodus 3:14). See also John 1:1, 14; 10:30-33; 20:28; Col. 2:9; Phil. 2:5-8; Heb. 1:8

1 John 4:2-3, “This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”

The above verse needs to be cross-referenced with John 1:1, 14 (also written by John), where he states that the Word was God and the Word became flesh.

1 John 4:2-3 is saying that if you deny that Jesus is God in the flesh, then you are of the spirit of the Antichrist.

John 8:24, “I said, therefore, to you, that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am, you will die in your sins.”

Jesus said that if you do not believe “that I am,” you will die in your sins. In Greek, I am ‘ego eimi,’ which means ‘I am.’ These are the same words used in John 8:58, where Jesus says “…before Abraham was, I am.” He was claiming the divine title by quoting Exodus 3:14.

The Greek Septuagint is the Hebrew Old Testament translated into Greek and done by Jews around 250 B.C. They translated Exodus 3:14 as ‘ego eimi’ “I AM”).

Jesus is the proper object of faith

It is not simply enough to have faith. Faith is only as valid as the person in whom you put it. You must put your faith in the proper person. Cults have false objects of faith (false gods); therefore, their faith is useless – no matter how sincere they are.

If you put your faith in a guru, a philosopher, or a past teacher (and not Jesus) to save you from your sins on Judgment Day, then you will be in a lot of trouble no matter how sincere or strong your faith is. You might have great faith but so what? Faith in something false has the same effect as no faith at all.

The Doctrine of the deity of Christ includes:

The Trinity – There is one God who exists in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are all coeternal and of the same nature.

Monotheism – There is only one God in all existence (Isaiah 43:10; 44:6, 8; 45:5, 14, 18, 21, 22; 46:9; 47:8). Mormons believe that many gods exist though they serve and worship only one. Therefore, they are polytheists which excludes them from the camp of Christianity.

The Hypostatic Union – That Jesus is both God and man.

The sufficiency of the sacrifice of Christ–The sacrifice of Christ is completely sufficient to pay for the sins of the world, and it is only through Jesus’ sacrifice that anyone can be saved.

As God – Only a perfect sacrifice to God is able to cleanse us from our sins. This is why Jesus, who is God in flesh, died for us.

He had to die for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2). Only God could do that.

As man – Jesus must be man to be able to be a sacrifice for man.

As a man, He can be the mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5).

This means that the Jehovah’s Witnesses, The Way International, Islam, etc., are outside of Christianity.

Also, essential Christianity, includes loving God. We are to love God with ALL our heart, soul, mind and strength, and more than we love anyone else.

Also, essential Christianity, includes loving God. We are to love God with ALL our heart, soul, mind and strength, and more than we love anyone else.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)

“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me." (Matthew 10:37)

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37-39)

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:26) Meaning we are to love Jesus more than we love others.

Jesus also says "as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me." (Matthew 25:40)

We are also told to love our enemies. (Matthew 5:44)

And we are told if we do not love our brother whom we have seen, we cannot love God whom we have not seen. (1 John 4;20)

The Bible says that LOVE FULFILLS THE LAW. (Romans 13:8,10)

The Bible says: The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself." (Romans 13:9)

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching." (John 14:23) and "Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. " (John 14:24)

All that is a part of essential Christianity.

In the Lutheran Book of Worship, Lutherans confess to not loving God with all their heart and not loving their neighbor as their self.

I come from a Lutheran background.

Out of my Lutheran background, I take "Sola Scriptura" which means "SCRIPTURE ALONE".

"Only Scripture" One verse for that is 1 Corinthians 4:6. “Do not go beyond what is written.”

W&T, I have a question for you based on the observation on the forum that you agreed with Moonlight about an anti-biblical teaching that claims a person can “loose their salvation”.

Do you know of any person, except for Jesus, who obeyed all the commands of God including the command to “love the LORD God will ALL their heart…?”

Constantly referring to me on this forum is unnecessary, Members that view can read what I

post or posted. Many members do not believe what you teach here. Be aware I do not answer to you on biblical and it is not required .

I agree that a person who goes to hell is not saved.

I agree that a person who goes to heaven is saved.

I agree that a TRUE CHRISTIAN is saved.

Everyone that gets to heaven loves God and loves Jesus.

Those that don't get there don't love God and don't love Jesus.

Anyone that gets to heaven loves God and loves Jesus. We already know from enough Bible verses that no one gets to heaven by works. Nonetheless, Jesus tells us to be exceedingly fruitful. And Jesus says that if we love him, we will obey his teachings, and ONE of his teachings is that we are fruitful and that we bear much fruit. So, we do not work our way to heaven, but what we do is to be an expression of our love for God and others.
